Blockchain adds 3D printing technology, meaning you can touch ‘smart manufacturing’ products and Ethereum

Crazy Review : The "smart manufacturing" project Genesis of Things recently launched a tangible proof of concept mechanism in the form of 3D printed titanium cufflinks. This means that the manufacturing industry will be transformed, combining 3D printing, blockchain and the Internet of Things in a novel way, which can not only protect intellectual property rights, but also automate supply chain processes. Blockchain technology has a variety of application areas, and it has been used in the cannabis industry before. It seems that there is no area that blockchain cannot subvert, except what you can't think of.

Genesis of Things is a new "smart manufacturing" project that is mainly developed with the wisdom of Ethereum members.

The project, which was founded and launched just weeks ahead of DevCon2 in Shanghai, already has a tangible proof of concept in the form of a set of 3D printed titanium cufflinks engraved with a QR code and bearing the Ethereum logo.

Genesis of Things combines 3D printing, blockchain, and the Internet of Things in novel ways to reinvent the manufacturing process. The company is keeping its details confidential for now, and more details about its methods and possible use cases will be released in the future.

It’s worth noting that the cufflinks pictured are still at the proof-of-concept stage; this is not a commercial product, but rather a condensed version meant to demonstrate the technology’s potential.

They have a custom binary serial number on one side, designed to connect separate items in the manufacturing process and anchor their specific design on the blockchain.

Dr Carsten Stoecker, who worked on the proof of concept, said Genesis of Things is a trusted, encrypted and open platform for the entire 3D printing supply chain.

Carsten Stoecker

He told IBTimes:

“Intellectual property extends globally and should be protected, each printed product has its own identity and digital product memory, and supply chain processes including trade finance are automated.”

“Ethereum is going mainstream and will be connected to the real world, and we want to use cufflinks to prove this so people can really feel its existence.”

“When you touch a cufflink, it feels a little rough, which is a good metaphor for what it’s like to use a brand new technology, but it’s also improving very quickly.”

“Every product has a story: where it comes from, how it’s made, how we use it, and until now, we haven’t been able to know the full story.”
