The picture above shows the corresponding positions of the 12 Earthly Branches in the palm of your hand. They are usually represented by the fingers of your left hand. When making predictions, you use your right hand to hold a pen to record, and your left thumb to count the corresponding positions of the Earthly Branches on your fingers. This is commonly known as counting with fingers.

The Earthly Branches are symbols used by the ancients to record time. Because there are twelve symbols, they are called the Twelve Branches, namely Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, and Hai.

The 12 Earthly Branches are divided into two categories: Yin Branches and Yang Branches. Yang Branches: Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen, Xu; Yin Branches: Chou, Mao, Si, Wei, You, Hai.

Zi means "here", referring to the fact that all things sprout from the moving Yang energy.

Chou is the knot, the Yang energy is above and has not yet descended.

Yin means to move and to lead, referring to the time when all things begin to emerge.

Mao means luxuriant, which means that all things are flourishing.

Chen means Zhen, and things grow through vibration.

Si means rising, referring to the abundance of Yang energy.

Wu means "wu", which refers to the flourishing and dense branches of all things.

It is not yet taste, but everything has taste.

Shen means body, referring to the completion of the bodies of all things.

You means old, the oldness of all things.

Xu means destruction, the destruction of all things.

Hai means core, the collection of all things.

The correspondence between the 12 earthly branches and the months

Yin, Mao and Chen are the second and third months of the lunar calendar in spring. All things sprout and grow in spring, and the trine represents wood.

Si, Wu and Wei are the fourth, fifth and sixth months of the lunar calendar. In summer, everything blooms luxuriantly and the weather is hot. The trinity represents fire.

Shen, You and Xu are the seventh, eighth and ninth months of the lunar calendar in autumn. In autumn, everything matures and the weather is austere. The triad represents gold.

Hai, Zi and Chou are the winter of the eleventh month of the lunar calendar. In winter, all things are stored and return to the ground. Ice and snow cover the ground. The triad represents water.
