Bitcoin and space travel become new hot spots for venture capital

Two industries that have traditionally been owned by governments are now targets of venture capital: currency and spacecraft.

Thomas Tunguz of Redpoint Ventures analyzed data from Mattmark and found that Bitcoin and space travel were two of the four fastest-growing areas of venture capital investment in the past three years.

Data shows that since 2012, the seven fastest-growing investment sectors have seen their financing levels double on average each year.

However, in the past 12 months, Bitcoin-related startups accounted for only 0.18% of total startup investment, and space travel accounted for less than 1%. Numerically speaking, it is "easier" to grow quickly when investment is low. From this perspective, it is easy to see that food and accommodation-related startups such as Airbnb and transportation startups such as Uber have been overfunded.

The data shows that space travel has received similar amounts of investment as food and beverage startups such as Blue Bottle Coffee. Bitcoin startups have received much more investment than drone startups, but much less than photo-sharing startups.
