Latin America's first Bitcoin conference held in Buenos Aires

Bitcoin trading has grown so rapidly in Argentina, where high inflation and government-imposed capital controls have led people to seek alternative methods of transferring money, that Buenos Aires was chosen to host the first Latin American Bitcoin Conference.

The forum, which brought together Bitcoin Argentina and Bitcoin Latin America, was held at the New Auditorium of the Buenos Aires Government and also included a live broadcast of the Virtual Currency Financial and Regulatory Environment Forum in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Argentina Bitcoin Conference

The purpose of the Bitcoin conference was to review regulatory measures for cryptocurrencies. Gonzalo Blousson, founder of the blockchain contract service BitCourt, first gave a lecture on the origins and main features of Bitcoin. Afterwards, one of the founders of Bitcoin Argentina introduced the relationship between Bitcoin and blockchain technology. Rodolfo Andragnes suggested that Bitcoin and blockchain could be disruptive technologies that could create a paradigm for transforming currency usage.

As for the Buenos Aires City Government, Coordinator Cecilia Lucca explained that officials understand that Bitcoin is an emerging technology that is changing the world and will likely continue to grow exponentially. Lucca even highlighted an example of the Honduran government using blockchain technology to create a more secure land registry system.

“It’s an open-ended story,” she said. “We don’t know if we will start collecting taxes on Bitcoin, or if it’s a bubble that will burst. The future is worth exploring, and this event will help start a discussion about this technology.” Luca confirmed that the government is thinking about hosting another Bitcoin conference to discuss the new trend of digital currencies and their potential applications in Argentina.
