Blockchain technology can have a significant impact in many areas, one of which is in domain names and DNS servers. Domain names will be more secure if we can decentralize DNS services. This feat will make it easier to transfer domain name ownership. Blockstack seems to have this idea, as they have proposed a blockchain-based DNS system. Blockstack wants to decentralize DNSThis isn’t the first time blockchain technology has been proposed to decentralize domain name services. There was an early form of a digital currency called Namecoin that attempted to do this, though that project ultimately failed to gain any significant traction. Perhaps the concept was too early for that time. The new solution proposed by Blockstack is to protect registered domain names with passwords by using distributed ledger technology. This not only provides an additional level of security for domain names, but also makes management easier. More importantly, decentralized DNS services eliminate censorship because there is no central party to control the service. Few people consider that blockchain technology could be a valuable helper for the world's domain names, but it turns out that it could solve a lot of problems. It's even possible to link domain names to individual IP addresses using distributed ledger technology. Such a service would prevent domain name hijacking because there would be no central record that could be hacked or modified. While it’s been a challenge for Blockstack to get this technology into a functional prototype, they are adding a new layer on top of the Bitcoin blockchain that runs on dedicated Blockstack nodes, each of which is responsible for routing and processing domain name transactions. This includes transfers of existing domain names, registrations of new domain names, and even data updates. The time to adopt this new solution may be sooner than people think. Each Blockstack node is both a DNS tool and a regular Bitcoin node. The Blockstack code is available from GitHub, and more information can be found in the whitepaper. There is also a lot of documentation available, and interested users and developers have a good chance to find out more about our decentralized domain name service.
