FAQ about IPFS (filecoin) version 0.7

IPFS FAQ:

Filecoin chapter 1-4, mining chapter 5-11, filc chapter 21-25

Version update:

v0.7 -- Added filc issues

v0.6 --Added the issue of independent IP

v0.5 --Added miner planning issues

Filecoin:

1. Question: When will filecoin start ICO?

A: Filecoin ICO ended on August 10, 2017, successfully raising $186 million. Together with previous fundraising from large institutions, a total of $258 million was raised. The initial estimated value of Filecoin is $2 billion. The official fundraising price is $0.75 per coin (the private crowdfunding price is $0.75-3)

2. Question: Can filecoin be purchased now?

A: Filecoin has not been unfrozen yet. Some exchanges have participated in the ICO and can provide futures purchases. After Filecoin is unfrozen, the exchange will distribute the currency to the wallet of the futures holder.

3. Question: Where can I buy filecoin?

Answer: Currently, gate.io and lbank.info have issued filecoin futures (for example, FIL6 means a 6-month unlocking period). Investors are advised to pay attention to the risks and invest with caution.

4. Q: When will filecoin be unfrozen?

A: The first batch of filecoin will be unfrozen about 6 months after the blockchain network is launched. There are also 12-month and 36-month unfreezing versions. For example, FIL36 means 36-month unfreezing. Note : The fil6 futures on the exchange are not unfrozen 6 months after listing on the exchange, but 6 months after the blockchain network is launched.

Mining

5. Question: Can IPFS be mined now?

A: The official mining plan for early miners was only announced in 2018. Please wait patiently for official news. Theoretically, the earliest time is when the first batch of June futures are released.

6. Q: What equipment is needed for IPFS mining?

Answer: IPFS mining does not require a graphics card. Because IPFS is provided to users for storage, in order to provide storage users with a good experience, it is recommended that 1. high-quality disks 2. higher upload bandwidth (the above are only suggestions, not mandatory requirements)

7. Question: How do IPFS miners make money?

A: IPFS storage miners provide capacity in the market and receive storage fees from users. Retrieval miners help users extract saved content and receive retrieval fees. At the same time, storage miners obtain the right to create blocks (mining) and receive mining rewards through space-time proof of work.

8. Question: Do I need to pay money as collateral to become an IPFS miner?

A: The Filecoin white paper states that when IPFS miners provide storage services, they need to provide a deposit guarantee (filecoin). If the order is not met and the user's demand for data is not met, the collateral will be deducted. However, the white paper does not disclose specific collateral details. We believe that early miners will not be deducted too much collateral when storage space is limited. Don't worry too much about this. Everything is subject to the official new details.

9. Q: What are the hardware requirements for mining?

A: The following are just suggestions for reference only. (When the real mining plan is launched, it may be modified.)

a. The upstream traffic of the network bandwidth should be as high as possible. (100MbpS) This is because IPFS uses DHT routing technology and bittorrent P2P transmission protocol. Local mining machines will frequently transmit traffic with surrounding nodes.

b. Memory configuration should satisfy Memory (G): Hard disk (T) = (0.5-1):1. Too little memory may affect performance. The reasons are as follows: 1. The more nodes the mining machine is connected to, the larger the memory. 2. In order to speed up reading, frequently accessed hot data will also be placed in the memory. So in summary, after the mining machine runs for a long time, the memory consumption of IPFS is considerable.

c. The hard disk does not need to be too large. For example, if the network is 100Mbps and the total upstream and downstream traffic is 2TB per day, a 200TB hard disk may not be effective. Even if the bandwidth is fully downloaded, it will take 200 days to download. Therefore, it is not recommended to prepare too many hard disks before mining. In addition, combined with question 8, the collateral is proportional to the storage capacity.

10. Q: Does mining require an independent IP (public IP)?

Answer: IPFS supports NAT penetration technology. But if you want to maximize the performance of IPFS, you still need a public IP. But I can't answer which one is more cost-effective at the moment, because mining has not started yet. It is recommended that you don't rush to buy bandwidth for independent IPs if conditions are limited. (If it is proven to be effective or the effect is not great, I will update this question later)

11. Q: I want to participate in the official test period miner program

Answer: Visit https://goo.gl/forms/QWXEKxUQ8XaujysX2. There is no problem with the website link. If you cannot access it, it is due to your own problems.

About filc

21. What is filc?

For details, please see the white paper (available in the group)

22. My imtoken wallet does not show filc.

After receiving filc, the wallet will automatically display the name as filc1.

23. I cannot trade on DEW, and it says there is not enough money.

First, you need to transfer the corresponding token, and then you must have some eth or dew as a handling fee before you can trade.
