On January 8, 360 Enterprise Security Group and 360 Liewang Platform released the "2019 Internet Fraud Trend Research Report" (hereinafter referred to as the Report) based on nearly 20,000 valid fraud reports received by 360 Liewang Platform in 2019. The report shows that fraud caused by virtual currency has become the mainstream of financial fraud, causing per capita losses of more than 130,000 yuan; and pig-killing scams have been a common means of Internet fraud in recent years. The report shows that the number of effective fraud reports in 2019 was 15,505, the lowest since 2014. The number was 24,260 in 2017 and 21,703 in 2018. However, the per capita loss in 2019 set a historical record of 24,549 yuan, exceeding 14,413 yuan in 2017 and 24,476 yuan in 2018. Among them, financial fraud is a high-incidence type, with 3,314 reports in 2019, followed by 1,927 gaming frauds and 1,823 part-time job frauds. However, the highest per capita loss is online gambling fraud, with a per capita loss of 73,953 yuan, followed by dating fraud, with a per capita loss of 53,351 yuan, and financial fraud ranks third with a per capita loss of 53,265 yuan.
From the perspective of the geographical characteristics of victims of online fraud, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou all appear on the list. Guangdong Province leads in terms of "quantity", accounting for 10.7% of the total number of reports, ranking first. This indirectly reflects that Guangdong people have a relatively high awareness of rights protection; the top two regions in terms of per capita losses are Beijing and Shanghai.
The report shows that men are more likely to be deceived, accounting for 66.9% of the total number of reports. However, the average loss per woman is as high as more than 30,000 yuan. Regardless of whether they are men or women, their deceptions show distinct preferences and habits. For example, the two most reported online frauds by men are financial fraud and game fraud. The fraud with the highest average loss per person is online gambling fraud.
The frauds that women reported the most were financial fraud and part-time job fraud. The report said that from the analysis of relevant reported cases, it was found that unemployed housewives and college students were the main victims of part-time job fraud.
Scammers treat young and old people equally. The report shows that the highest number of reports came from people aged 18 to 22, accounting for 23%. Most of this age group are college students. People aged 23 to 27 and 28 to 32 are the second and third largest groups of reports, respectively. It can be seen that people born in the 1980s and 1990s are the main victims of fraud.
The number of reports from people aged 58+ (people aged 58 and above) was the lowest, but the per capita loss was also the highest, at 83,771 yuan. The per capita losses of people aged 53 to 57 and 48 to 52 followed closely behind. The three major age groups are mainly those born in the 1960s and 1950s. Relevant reporting data shows that people in this age group are more likely to encounter financial fraud, and this type of fraud often causes large losses (per capita loss of 53,265 yuan).
The report shows that QQ is the main way for victims to contact scammers or fraudulent information, accounting for 10.69% of the total. WeChat is second, accounting for 10.38% of the total. The relatively traditional tool of telephone is ranked third, accounting for 9.76% of the total. In recent years, the notorious dating scam routines such as tea girls, volunteer teachers, and American soldiers have spread rapidly using social platforms.
In terms of per capita loss, the frauds encountered through "live broadcast rooms" are the most "harmful", with per capita losses reaching 134,729 yuan. Relevant cases show that such live broadcast rooms are mainly set up in the name of "investment guidance" and "stock exchange", and are generally named as daily limit training classes, 10 million concentration camps, XXX stock speculation competitions, etc. The anchors in the live broadcast rooms often call themselves "mentors" and recommend various phishing financial management platforms in the name of "digital currency" to the audience.
Whether spending money or borrowing money, whether young or old, financial fraud can take advantage of it. Data shows that investment and loan financial fraud are the two major types of financial fraud, accounting for 92.2% of the total financial fraud. Among people aged 23 to 58+, the most reported frauds are financial frauds. Virtual currency fraud caused the highest per capita loss of 134,522 yuan. Scammers used the banners of "blockchain", "digital currency", "bitcoin" and "mining" to commit fraud.
Dating scams, commonly known as "pig-killing scams", are also a common type of online scams in recent years. The report shows that dating scams are the most common.
