Pizza Hut Now Accepts Cryptocurrency Payments in Venezuela

Fast food chains like Burger King and Church’s Chicken already accept crypto payments in the South American country of Venezuela.

A well-known American pizza chain has started accepting cryptocurrency payments at all its stores in Venezuela.

Pizza Hut stores in the South American country now accept cryptocurrency as a form of payment for food and beverages, according to a tweet from crypto services firm CryptoBuyer on Nov. 27. Prior to this, the cryptocurrency firm partnered with Mega Soft to facilitate crypto payments in over 20,000 stores and businesses, boosting adoption in Venezuela.

“Today, Pizza Hut cannot do without these technological advances and new approaches to daily necessities,” Richard ElKhouri, Pizza Hut Venezuela’s operations director, told local news outlet ElAxioma. “It’s important that we adapt to young people, modern adults, people who have technological knowledge.”

Customers can use CryptoBuyer to spend BTC, LTC, DASH, BNB, BUSD, ETH, USDT, DAI and its native token XPT at the chain’s stores. Pizza Hut has branches in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas, as well as in the cities of Maracay, Maracaibo and Barquisimeto.

Cryptobuyer, a Panama-based cryptocurrency merchant gateway startup that also runs Bitcoin ATMs in Central and South America, has enabled crypto payments for a number of popular companies, including American fast food chains like Burger King, the Tamanaco Intercontinental Hotel in Caracas, and Traki, the country’s largest retail store.

Bitcoin’s origins are inextricably linked to this American staple, and the first recorded commercial purchase using the cryptocurrency was the ordering of two pizzas. On May 22, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz completed the first recorded commercial Bitcoin purchase, paying 10,000 BTC (now worth about $181 million) to a Bitcoin Forum user to have two pizzas delivered to him from a Papa John’s store in the United States.
