If it is loud, the sound is loud; if it is soft, the sound is short. When the mind is clear and the breath is harmonious, the voice will be warm, mellow and smooth. If the spirit is turbid and the breath is short, the voice will be anxious and hoarse. Therefore, the voice of a noble person comes from the Dantian, is connected with the heart energy, and reaches outward in the vastness. Why? Dantian is the root of voice; heart qi is the beginning of voice; the tip of tongue is the surface of voice. If the roots are deep, the surface will be heavy; if the roots are shallow, the surface will be light. If the sound is clear and round, strong and bright, slow and fierce, quick and harmonious, long, powerful and majestic; if the sound is loud like the sound of a bell, the sound of a tortoise drum, and small like the melody of a cold spring or the tune played by a zither, when you respond to its words, it will be pure and then move; when you speak to it, it will be leisurely and then respond. Therefore, the good sound can be heard far without interruption, is clear when shallow, can be hidden when deep, is loud but not turbid, is fresh when small, is fine but not chaotic, is clear when it comes out, and has intense lingering sound, and can be round or square. Such a sound is associated with longevity, good fortune and prosperity. As for the voice of a villain, it comes from the tip of the tongue, with rapid breaths but not far away, not leaving the lips, disordered and intermittent, quick and hoarse, slow and astringent, deep but sluggish, shallow and restless; or loud and scattered, or long and broken, or light and uneven, or lingering without rhythm, or crag and violent, or confused and floating, rough, turbid and scattered, lame, shallow and astringent; or like the sound of a broken bell, the sound of a defeated drum, or like a cold chicken feeding its chicks, a hungry duck choking on meat; or like a sick ape seeking a mate, or like a lone goose lost from the flock; fine as the hum of autumn earthworms, loud like the chirping of cicadas in the evening; the male is like the barking of a dog, and the female is like the bleating of a solitary sheep. Such voices are all shallow. If a man has a soft voice like a woman, he will be lonely and poor all his life. If a woman acts like a man with a violent voice, she will suffer harm throughout her life. Therefore, it is auspicious if one has a small body and a loud voice, inauspicious if one has a large body and a small voice, and good if one's body and voice are proportional. The sound of uneven wetness or dryness is called a net sound; the sound of small or loud sound is called male and female sound; the sound of first slow and then fast, or first fast and then slow, or the sound stops before the breath ends, or the color changes before the sound starts, all of which are shallow signs. Therefore, when the spirit is settled inside and the qi is harmonious outside, the voice will be peaceful and the words will have a sequence, and there will be no change of color. If the mind is uneasy, the qi will be out of harmony and the words will be out of order; if one is drunken and has a confused look, these are all signs of a mean and inferior person. Moreover, those who make sounds like broken tubes are rich, those who make broken tiles are lowly, those who make broken wood are poor, and those who make broken bamboos are miserable. Those who make sounds like doves are mostly broken and scattered, those who make sounds like ducks are mostly lowly, those who are as violent as jackals are mostly poisonous, and those who make sounds like the river in a deep hall are blessed. Therefore, if the voice is as soft as crying, the person will be poor and lonely; if the voice is as rough as crying, disasters will follow; if the voice is bright, the imagery will be far-reaching; if the voice is tender and delicate, the family's livelihood will be gone. Poetry Translation A person's character moves in his heart and is expressed in his voice. Therefore, the sound is actually stored by Qi. The qi hits the numerous holes and makes sounds, conveying the inner thoughts to respond to things outside the body. The human voice is like the sound of bells and drums. The louder the bells and drums, the louder the sound. The smaller the bells and drums, the shorter the sound. If one's mind is clear and calm, his voice will be warm and mellow. If the spirit is turbid and the breath is short, then his voice will be rapid and hoarse. Therefore, the voice of a noble person originates from the Dantian, is connected with the heart energy, and comes out like a vast ocean. What is the reason for this? Dantian is the root of sound, heart qi is the end of sound, and the tip of the tongue is where sound comes from. If the roots are deep, the sound will be loud; if the roots are shallow, the sound will be soft. There are several kinds of good voices: light and mellow, sonorous and loud, slow but serious, quick but peaceful, and long but powerful. The sound is as loud as the sound of a huge bell, the roar of a huge drum; the sound is faint and like the melody of a cold spring; when playing the zither and the harp together, it is pure and moving when responding to people's live words; when talking to people, it is leisurely and responsive. Therefore, a good voice is distant but not interrupted, shallow but clear, deep but reserved, human but not turbid, small but refreshing, fine but not chaotic, distinct, and with intense echoes, just like the melodious and smooth sounds of musical instruments such as the sheng and the reed, and can be round or square. The shape of this kind of sound represents blessings, wealth and longevity. The voice of a villain comes from the tip of the tongue, with short breathing that does not leave the lips, and the mouth and tongue move randomly, intermittently, short and hoarse, slow and astringent, deep and paused, superficial and rapid, or loud but scattered, or long but broken, or light and uneven, lingering without rhythm, or like exposed cliffs, or jumbled, messy and impatient, vulgar, turbid and scattered, or words that make people secretive, or stuttering, or like the sound of a broken bell, or like the sound of a broken drum, or like a cold chicken calling its chicks, or like the sound of a hungry duck swallowing meat, or like a sick monkey courting a mate, or like a lone goose that has fallen behind, the sound is as small as an earthworm, or as loud as a cicada. A man's voice is like a dog barking, and a woman's voice is like a sheep moaning. These are shallow voices. A man's voice is as soft as a woman's, and he will live a lonely and poor life. If a woman's voice is as rough as a man's, she will be a nuisance to her loved ones throughout her life. It is lucky if you are short but have a loud voice, and it is unlucky if you are tall but have a soft voice. People whose physique and voice match are lucky. The sound is sometimes dry and wet, which is called the sound of a net; the sound is sometimes loud and sometimes small, which is called the male and female sound. If the pronunciation starts out slow and then becomes rapid, or starts out rapid and then slow, or the breath stops before the sound stops, or the face changes before the sound is made, these are all signs of a bad fate. Therefore, only when the spirit is in control within can one's complexion be peaceful outside. The voice should be calm, the words should be spoken in order, and the facial expression should not change color. If the mind is not at peace, the qi is not harmonious, speech will be out of order, and the face will have a drunken look, these are the signs of a mean person. People with voices like a broken tube are rich, people with voices like broken tiles are poor, people with voices like broken wood are lowly, people with voices like broken bamboo are miserable, people with voices like goose are often down and out, people with voices like ducks are lowly, people with voices like jackals are poisonous, and people with voices like a dog barking in a deep hall are blessed. Therefore, those who have a soft voice like crying will be poor and lonely; those who have a rough voice like crying will suffer constant disasters; those who have a clear voice have lofty ambitions, and those who have a delicate voice will have good luck in their family and disasters will disappear.
