【Prophecy】

A grass-headed man who is neither white nor black appears

Borrow a branch full of blood

【Song said】

The blood of heroes dyed the mountains and rivers red

The plum blossoms on the tree are all bleak and pitiful, the nest is also empty

Detailed explanation of Tui Bei Tu in vernacular Chinese

1. Explain the prophecy

[Neither white nor black, a grass-headed man emerges]

The "Huang" in Huang Chao's name. The five colors in ancient times are: red, yellow, green, black and white. It is not white, not black, and has the grass radical, so it is only yellow.

[Borrow a branch]: Huang Chao borrowed the power of Wang Xianzhi to develop. "One branch": refers to Wang Xianzhi.

In May 875, Huang Chao started an uprising and joined Wang Xianzhi's rebel army, and Huang became Wang's deputy. In 876, Huang Chao led 2,000 troops to oppose the amnesty, while Wang Xianzhi had hundreds of thousands of troops. In 878, Wang Xianzhi died in battle in Huangmei (now northwest of Huangmei, Hubei), and his troops surrendered to Huang Chao, which was called "borrowing a branch."

【Blood flying all over the sky】: Huang Chao killed too many people.

Huang Chao's uprising was brutal and indiscriminate. There is a saying among the people that "Huang Chao slaughtered eight million people - there was no way to escape his fate." As for its abuse, there are many of them posted on the Internet, please refer to them yourself.

2. Explanation of the Song

【A hero rises above thousands of people】

The traditional Chinese character for "万" is 万, which is the radical of the character for grass, so "萬頭頭" (ten thousand people's heads) is a metaphor for the character "黄". 「Hero」: uprising, rebel army. This sentence refers to the Huang Chao Uprising.

[The mountains and rivers are stained with blood, and the sun is red]: Huang Chao killed too many people, and the mountains and rivers are stained with blood.

[All the plum blossoms on a tree are in bleak state]: Emperor Xizong fled to Sichuan, and the royal family with the surname Li in Chang'an was wiped out by Huang Chao.

[Poor nest is also empty]

The phrase has a double meaning, not only pointing out the fall of the Tang Dynasty - Chang'an was occupied by Huang Chao in 881, but also pointing out that Huang Chao was ultimately defeated and his imperial dream was "shattered".

3. Interpretation

In the picture: the tree, according to the "a tree of plum blossoms" in the ode, we know it is a plum tree; there is a nest on the tree, which means Huang Chao appeared in the Li Tang Dynasty; the nest is empty, which means "the nest will become empty if it is covered" in the ode. The several corpses under the nest refer to the fact that Huang Chao killed too many people.

What is the ninth image about: [An Lushan Rebellion]

In fact, when Huang Chao entered Chang'an, the citizens lined the streets to welcome him, but they did not expect that Huang Chao inherited the corruption of the late Tang Dynasty... Huang Chao did not govern the country or care about the people's livelihood, and his soldiers openly robbed people and snatched women on the streets of Chang'an. Because he could not find the author of the poem that satirized Huang Chao, he killed all the guards in front of the Shangshu Province and more than 3,000 Confucian scholars in Chang'an who could write poetry. When the government troops launched a counterattack, all the people in the city stood on the side of the government troops. After Huang Chao's victorious counterattack, the New Book of Tang recorded: "Chao was so angry that the people welcomed the royal army and attacked and killed 80,000 people. The blood flowed on the road and was wadable. This was called washing the city."

Among the 60 pictures in "Tui Bei Tu", three times the dead and bones were used to predict wars with too many deaths, which are all consistent with historical facts. Without unravelling the history of disguise, it is difficult to see the profound meaning of the picture.
