Japanese home appliance store giant to trial Bitcoin payment service

[Kyodo News, April 4] Japanese home appliance store giant Bic Camera announced on April 5 that it will start offering a service that supports payment in the virtual currency Bitcoin, starting from April 7, using two flagship stores in Tokyo as a pilot. Bitcoin is more popular overseas than in Japan, and this move is intended to provide convenience for foreign tourists visiting Japan. It is reported that this is the first time that a Japanese retail store giant has launched a Bitcoin payment service.

The two flagship stores that have become the pilot are the Yurakucho store (located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) and the BICQLO Shinjuku East Exit store (located in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo). The store has received suggestions from some foreign tourists that they would like to provide Bitcoin payment services. Whether to further increase the number of stores that provide this service in the future will be decided based on usage conditions.

Bitcoin is a virtual currency that circulates on the Internet and has no credit guarantee from the government or central bank. The bankruptcy of Mt.Gox (located in Tokyo), the world's largest Bitcoin exchange, in February 2014 has heightened people's vigilance against virtual currencies.

However, the new "Fund Settlement Law" implemented on the 1st of this month has strengthened the relevant transaction regulations for virtual currencies, which has eased people's concerns about the security of Bitcoin. "Bike Jia Mei Le" predicts that the number of Bitcoin users in Japan will also increase.
