Everyone has read Journey to the West, right? Demons, ghosts, gods and Buddhas of the nine heavens all appeared here, except for Sun Wukong, who was neither in the Three Realms nor in the Five Elements. People are always afraid of unknown things, so what is the nature of the legendary demons, ghosts, gods and gods? Let’s take a look at this issue of the physiognomy column. 1. Let’s talk about demons and monsters first. This word is often called monster in the West, generally referring to animals or orcs with terrifying appearance, while in the East it is often collectively referred to as monsters. Monster is a general derogatory term, referring to all objects with super powers or magic that are neither gods, immortals, humans nor ghosts, and are cultivated from animals and plants and have transformed into human form (some may not be transformed into humans). Among them, most of the demons are animals that have been cultivated, such as snake demons and rabbit demons; while most of the monsters are plants that have been cultivated, such as tree monsters. But this is not absolute. It should be pointed out in particular that if animals and plants are wholeheartedly committed to doing good and attaining enlightenment during the process of cultivation, they are fully qualified to cultivate and become immortals. Demons and monsters are the negative consequences of animals and plants cultivating in the direction of evil. During the process of cultivation (that is, before becoming monsters or immortals, but before they have some magical powers), these animals and plants are often called spirits, which are slightly more friendly than calling them monsters, but they can also be called monsters (note that they are not monsters in the essential sense). Monsters can be active during the day and at night. 2. Next, let’s talk about demons. Demons are basically the same as monsters in a narrow sense, but there are two differences. One is that demons are much more powerful than monsters in terms of magic power. Ordinary gods may not be their opponents. They are senior monsters and have a bit of anti-government nature. The second is that demons may be immortals and gods who have gone astray and fallen, while monsters are native to animals and plants. Demons can be active during the day and at night. 3. Let’s talk about ghosts. Many people talk about ghosts together with demons and monsters, and think that they are almost the same. This is extremely wrong! Ghosts are extremely yin creatures, commonly known as souls, which implies that their life span has ended, their physical bodies in the world are gone, and only a vague, non-physical unit remains. Most ghosts are formed when the soul leaves the body after death. They can only move around in the underworld. If they return to the world of the living, they can only come out at night. Because the balance of yin and yang in the human body is broken and becomes a pure yin body, they naturally have some superpowers, but they are extremely weak. So the power of ghosts is very weak. There are generally three ways out for ghosts. The first is to be reincarnated as a human, animal or plant. The second is to suffer in hell. These two are the most common. The third is to become a god through corpse transformation. Generally speaking, these are people who did many good deeds in the world, or practiced Taoism, or were guided by masters, or were granted titles, but did not have the opportunity to become immortals in the flesh and could only become gods through corpse transformation after death. In fact, these people have never really been so-called ghosts. Ghosts can only move around at night, it is absolutely impossible for them to be active during the day. 4. Let’s talk about immortals. Broadly speaking, there are five kinds of immortals: celestial immortals, earthly immortals, human immortals, human immortals, and ghost immortals. In a narrow sense, immortals refer to celestial immortals and earthly immortals. Here we will only talk about immortals in a narrow sense, that is, immortals as distinguished from gods. The concept of immortals is also purely religious in nature. In other words, it is exclusive to Taoism. Regardless of whether they are Taoists or not, people or things that become immortals are always closely related to Taoism. Immortals are people who have achieved sanctity in the flesh and perfect merits. All objects can become immortals. There are two ways to become immortals. The first one is passive immortalization. Whether it is a human, animal, plant or even a non-living thing, it can become an immortal passively. For example, objects can become immortals by being enlightened by immortals, or being infected by immortals' spiritual energy, or taking Taoist elixirs, or growing in an environment that absorbs the spiritual energy of heaven and earth. There are many examples of this, so I won’t list them all. The second is to cultivate immortality actively. "Anyone with nine orifices can cultivate immortality," so only humans and a small number of animals can cultivate immortality. When they believe in Taoism, actively practice authentic Taoist spells, and do more good deeds, those who are predestined among them can cultivate to become immortals. But one must practice authentic magic. If one practices unorthodox magic, even if one succeeds, one cannot become an immortal, but only a demon. After becoming an immortal, if there is no official recognition, one can only be regarded as a wandering immortal, not yet in the true stream, but has obtained the body of free and immortal life. If officially recognized, one will enter the true stream and become a true immortal. At this time, you can choose to be an official in heaven, or you can choose not to go. After all, you are an immortal yourself and do not want to be controlled by the Jade Emperor. At this time, you can find a fairy mountain or famous island, be free and unrestrained, play chess, drink wine and visit friends all day long, listen to the sutras of the gods when you have nothing to do, and not worry about worldly affairs. It is really the ultimate happiness! 5. Next, the concept of God is not religious in nature. Unlike Buddha and immortals, God is a concept of belief and an institutional concept. This point should be paid careful attention to. We are not talking about the ancient gods here, but only the gods of later generations. Some ancient gods such as Nuwa, Gonggong, Zhurong, Xingtian, etc. are innate natural gods, which are strictly distinguished from the so-called gods in later generations. They are generally called great gods or ancient great gods. The five immortals in a broad sense are the gods of heaven and earth, humans and ghosts. The immortals mentioned above refer to the immortals of heaven and earth, and the gods discussed here refer to the gods and ghosts. Gods are people who are conferred titles after a person's death and go to heaven or the underworld to do work. Please note that it is after death. The implication is that gods are definitely formed after the soul returns to heaven, without taking away their earthly bodies, and generally work in heaven. For example, those who are conferred titles at the end of the Investiture of the Gods are all gods. To become a god, one does not need to have a religious background, does not need to study and practice relevant religious scriptures, and does not need to be a Taoist priest or a monk. As long as you have destiny, or are a very outstanding person in the world, or a person who does many good deeds, or a person respected by the people in the world, you may be canonized as a god by the heavenly court after your death, and be assigned to serve as an official in heaven or the underworld. For example, Bao Zheng, Wen Tianxiang, Guan Yu and others in later generations did not believe in Taoism or Buddhism, nor did they practice cultivation. They were absorbed into the heaven and became gods after their death just because of their great influence in the world and their excellent character. Therefore, the concept of God is not a purely Taoist concept. It is different from immortals and Buddhas, but it is often overlooked by many people.
