The art of palmistry has a long history. Its sources include the West, India and China, and it has a long history and has finally become the diverse spectacle it is today. There are two types of physiognomy: innate and acquired, and there are differences in shape and complexion. The hands contain the principles of the two yin and yang and the three talents, and encompass the secrets of the Tai Chi and the five elements. In the past, no matter how the Monkey King struggled, he could not escape the clutches of Tathagata Buddha; but now doctors can examine the subtle pathologies of the human body with just their hands. Therefore, when it is so big, the heaven and earth are all in the palm of your hand; when it is so small, all the internal organs are clearly in your hand.

People have two hands, each containing a Tai Chi. The left and right hands represent yin and yang respectively, the palms and fingers represent yin and yang respectively, the face and back represent yin and yang respectively, the texture and complexion represent yin and yang respectively, the shape and spirit represent yin and yang respectively, and the flows and vortices of the fingerprints also represent yin and yang respectively.

The four fingers are divided into three sections, which represent the three talents; the patterns of heaven, earth and man represent the three talents. Each texture can determine the past, present and future, which is also the meaning of the three talents.

The five fingers represent the five elements, which determine the four directions of east, west, south, and north, and correspond to the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter; the complexion is dominated by the five elements, which determine the prosperity, decline, and rest; the palms are also divided into the five elements, each with its own control. Among the five fingers, the thumb represents earth, the index finger represents wood, the middle finger represents fire, the ring finger represents gold, and the little finger represents water. Except for earth, all the Five Elements have the Three Talents, which are divided into growth, prosperity and decline. Earth is divided into yin and yang (yin and yang).

The combination of the two yin and yang, the three talents and the five elements can determine the fortunes and misfortunes in a person's life. The principles of the operation and transformation of all things can be seen at the palm of your hand. “If you can understand the principles of yin and yang, the heaven and the earth are in the palm of your hand.” The ancients had already reached a conclusion. The palm corresponds to astronomy, geography, and human affairs holographically, and represents the distribution of the microcosmic field with oneself as the center. Below we will only make a systematic positioning of the five fingers, which will serve as a key to open the door and get a glimpse of the treasure house of physiognomy.

1. Thumb

The Five Elements belong to earth, governing the spleen and stomach, and ideas; it is Gouchen, governing fields and land, representing residences, parents, protection, youth (before the age of 14), and foundation.

Earth is the mother of all things and gives birth to and nourishes all things, so the thumb represents parents. When people are young, they are raised by their parents, so the thumb represents the foundation and the god of protection. Earth represents immovable property, so the Zhen position under the thumb can be used to determine a person's property, and the Gen position can be used to determine a person's home feng shui. Parents give birth to brothers, so the Gen position can sever the relationship between brothers.

2. Index finger

The Five Elements belong to Wood, governing the liver and gallbladder, governing the soul; it is the Azure Dragon, governing wife and wealth, governing bathing, governing wine and sex, governing peach blossoms, governing inspiration, governing running around, governing youth, the stage of starting a family, and governing changes.

Wood represents growth and soaring, so it resembles a green dragon. When people reach adulthood, they must first get married. Getting married means having a wife, which is the foundation of life. “Food and sex are part of human nature.” Therefore, after the age of twenty, it is time for marriage, which is also the peach blossom star. When people are in romantic luck, they often have strong inspiration, so their inspiration can be judged from the Xun position under the index finger. Money is the foundation of life, so one can predict a person’s fortune by the aura of the Xun position.

3. Middle finger

The Five Elements belong to fire, governing the heart and the spirit; it is the Vermillion Bird, governing officials and ghosts, governing fame, governing official career, governing business, governing news, governing lawsuits, governing upwardness, governing illusion, governing mind, governing health, governing middle age (thirties), and governing the stage of establishing a career.

Fire represents magnificence, glory, and positivity, so it represents fame and honor. The nature of fire is illusory, so one knows how difficult a career in politics is. Fire governs the mind, so seeking fame and success requires a lot of effort. The ancients often said "starting a family and establishing a career", which refers to the stage of establishing a career. The middle finger represents yourself, working hard and striving for fame and success. The middle finger represents disease, health, career and temperament. The heart is the master of the spirit, and a person's destiny is determined by his heart. A person usually determines his or her major goals in life during his or her youth. Therefore, one can judge the success or failure of a person's career, whether he or she will be successful in official career, and the good or evil of his or her character from the Li position under the middle finger.

4. Ring finger

The Five Elements belong to metal, governing the lungs and the soul; it is the White Tiger, governing brothers and friends, representing austerity and competition, representing assistants, representing decline, representing precious things, representing strength, representing majesty, and governing the stage of preserving a business in middle age.

The nature of metal is harsh and competitive, so it represents brothers and friends. The ring finger can show the fate with brothers and friends. After a person starts a business, he needs to lead a group to maintain the business, so it is the stage of maintaining the business. Therefore, the success or failure of a person’s career in middle age can be determined from the Sun Line under the ring finger. Brothers and friends can either save money or spend money. The key lies in using it moderately. If there are no brothers to guard the wealth, it will be scattered; if there are too many brothers, the wealth will be wasted. The area under the ring finger can be seen as a treasury, so one’s fortune can be seen from the texture. The ring finger represents the fortune of middle age.

5. Little finger

The Five Elements belong to water, governing the kidneys and ambition; it represents Xuanwu, descendants, mobility, difficulty in raising, theft, changeability, desire (lust), spirit, intelligence, and the old age (living out one’s life).

The nature of water is to flow continuously, so it represents children and also governs family fortune (family life). My children are my own, and if I don’t teach them, it will be difficult for them to become successful. Xuanwu is of the nature of water, and is a person who is full of worries and thoughts. It is dark, flowing, and changeable. It governs reproduction, is the seat of spirit, and represents information about descendants. Water is the main element for storage in winter, which represents the eighties, the period of aging, and the fortune of old age. Therefore, the Kun position under the little finger can show the fortune of children, family fortune, spirit and desires.

The five fingers are born with different lengths. It is unusual if three are long and two are short. It is important that the five fingers are balanced and upright, with the longest three fingers, the index finger, middle finger and ring finger, being the most important, as they determine one’s success or failure, and status in life. The middle finger represents official affairs, the index finger represents wife and wealth, and wealth gives birth to officialdom. It is the official’s left arm and the man behind the scenes. The ring finger represents brothers, who are overcome by officials and used by officials. Therefore, they are subordinates, opponents, friends, and staff. The middle finger represents yourself, the index finger represents the inside, and the ring finger represents the outside, which means a good wife at home and a friend outside. From weak to crown, from crown to prosperous, from prosperous to declining, from declining to tomb, just like the four scenes of spring, summer, autumn and winter, each of the five fingers has its own master.

The five fingers can also correspond to the Heavenly Stems, with the left hand corresponding to the Yang stems and the right hand corresponding to the Yin stems. The left hand controls the four directions, and the right hand controls the four corners. Men are on the left and women are on the right, and their destinies are different. This is actually to fix the destiny information of a person with the five elements and six gods to reflect the innate information and the state of the mind, nature and emotions. Among them, the relationship between the six relatives is the same as the rules of Na Jia, and the six gods have a fixed correspondence with the six relatives, each occupying its own palace, so it is the initial state of the origin and the constant of destiny. There is also a certain correspondence between the six relatives corresponding to the five fingers and the six relatives corresponding to the four pillars.

Palmistry can be divided into congenital and acquired: one's own destiny is acquired, from youth to old age; while family (relatives palace) fortune is congenital. So first come parents, then brothers, then yourself, then wives and concubines, and finally children. The inside is innate and the outside is acquired, so the innate ones are father and brothers, and the acquired ones are wife and children.

The five fingers are transformed by the five elements, are the ends of the five internal organs, and represent the five emotions. The fingers and palms are widely used in medicine and Qigong.

In pediatric massage of traditional Chinese medicine, moving earth into water can stop diarrhea, and moving water into earth to nourish the spleen is based on this theory. The hand seals in Qigong and the finger gestures of Taoism are also inevitably related to the five elements of the fingers and palms.

It can be expressed in a single word, and nothing is left out. One of the differences between humans and animals is that humans have hands. Hands are both the product of labor and the creative tool of labor. The hands are transformed by the five elements, and therefore they contain the spirit of heaven and earth and contain the power of creation of heaven and earth. If scholars want to explore the secrets of heaven and earth, they should first understand their own hands. This is the author's point of view.
