How did Xu Fu predict Zhou Yafu's fate by looking at his face?

During the Han Dynasty, the theories of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements and the theory of the correspondence between heaven and man gradually became popular, and fortune tellers used them to predict people's fortunes.

The most famous fortune teller at that time was named Xu Fu, who was famous for his ability to read faces and interpret dreams. Zhou Yafu was the second son of the famous minister Zhou Bo. He served as the county magistrate in Henei. Due to his own limitations, Zhou Yafu had no ambition to become a king or prime minister.

Once, Xu Fu read Zhou Yafu's fortune and predicted: Three years later, you will be granted a title of nobility; eight years after being granted a title of nobility, you can be promoted to general or prime minister, but after another nine years, you will definitely starve to death. After hearing this, Zhou Yafu didn't believe it at all. He said: This is simply nonsense. My father's title of marquis has been inherited by my elder brother. How can I have the chance to be conferred the title of marquis? Even if my brother dies, his son will inherit the title, and it will never be my turn. If I were lucky, I would be granted a title of nobility and become a prime minister. How could I possibly starve to death?

Xu Fu explained: Judging from your facial features, you have horizontal lines extending into your mouth, which means you will starve to death. Later, what Xu Fu said came true. Three years later, Zhou Yafu's elder brother was convicted and stripped of his title, and Zhou Yafu inherited his brother's title. Six years later, the Huns invaded and Emperor Wen of Han appointed Zhou Yafu as general and stationed him in Xiuli. He was highly appreciated by the emperor for his strict military discipline and was later promoted to lieutenant. In the third year of Emperor Jingdi of Han Dynasty, the Rebellion of the Seven States broke out. Zhou Yafu was a military genius and quickly repelled the rebels and put down the rebellion. He was then appointed as prime minister by Emperor Jingdi of Han Dynasty.

Nine years later, Zhou Yafu was gradually alienated by Emperor Jing because of his upright personality, and he also fell out with other important officials in the court. Later, he got into trouble and was falsely accused of treason. To protest the injustice, Zhou Yafu went on a hunger strike and committed suicide five days later.

From the ups and downs of Zhou Yafu's fate, we can see how high Xu Fu's level of physiognomy was.
