CoinDesk's latest survey report: Who is really using Bitcoin?

Since the birth of digital currency, young people, white people, technical people and men have made up the population of the Bitcoin core community. Of course, this is just the result of media reports and online discussions.

So in 2015, does the above still accurately reflect the true status of the global Bitcoin user base? Through Coindesk's latest survey report - Who is really using Bitcoin? We can clearly understand the current situation.

We received about 4,000 responses from people in different countries, which may be the largest survey in the history of Bitcoin. After careful analysis, we produced a 45-page research report. This report can show us who really uses Bitcoin and why it is important for the Bitcoin ecosystem to understand this.

But more importantly, the report also provides insights into how we can expand the impact of digital currencies beyond the current population into new groups with different cultures, economic situations, and needs.

Key points from the report include:

? A macro picture of Bitcoin users by age, gender, region, and background.

? Detailed consumer spending data, i.e. how people acquire and use Bitcoin?

? Some suggestions on how companies can promote Bitcoin technology to emerging markets and disadvantaged groups

? Experts on Bitcoin’s “brand problem” and why making Bitcoin more understandable is key

Overview

Overall, the results of this survey still show that young, white, male technicians are the core demographic of the Bitcoin community.

About 60% of the 3,515 respondents who use Bitcoin are under the age of 35.

Despite the growing number of initiatives like Bitcoin Women’s Day, women are still very few and far between in their use of Bitcoin. Our survey results show that 90% of Bitcoin users are male. However, this number has only increased by 5.2% compared to the previous survey report.

The survey also showed the racial ranking of people using Bitcoin, with white people ranking first, accounting for 65.8%, and the second being yellow people, or Asians.

Although the survey results did not change the original pattern of young people, white people and men, some different situations occurred, such as in terms of average income. People with an annual income of $50,000 to $100,000 topped the list, accounting for 23.9%. 25% of people said their family income was less than $25,000.

While the majority of respondents are tech-savvy, the results defy the notion that early Bitcoin adopters were technical people. 75% of respondents said they first started using Bitcoin in May 2013. 33% said they started using Bitcoin in 2014.

Of course, this survey report also has its limitations. The regions surveyed this time are China, Japan, Spain and the United Kingdom, each with different local interest groups, but mainly accessed through CoinDesk's website and social media platforms. 49.85% of the respondents are from North America, followed by Europe and Asia, with 32.99% and 9.36% respectively. Therefore, to a large extent, this survey report may be more in line with the situation in North America and Europe, and may not necessarily reflect the use of Bitcoin in other regions. For example, we received relatively few responses from China, although we have heard that there are many digital currency users in China.
