The Chilean government has declared a state of emergency for coastal cities after a magnitude 8.3 earthquake and massive tsunami hit the country, while the United States has also issued a tsunami warning for cities on the west coast.
The earthquake was one of the largest in the world, lasting more than three minutes and was accompanied by more than ten aftershocks. The tremors were noticeable in Brazil and Argentina.
Guillermo Torrealba, CEO of surbtc , Chile's first bitcoin exchange, told reporters: "The earthquake has caused devastating damage to many fishing villages. The tsunami destroyed many buildings, including those that Chile rebuilt after the last natural disaster. To help rebuild the disaster area, you can donate bitcoins through surbtc . We will convert bitcoins into pesos (Chilean currency) for reconstruction work. The entire donation transaction process will be open and free. This will not only help Chile, but also contribute to the development of bitcoin."
Guillermo Torrealba also said that this is a friendly way to show the world what Bitcoin can do. The people of Chile need help now, and no matter where you are in the world, you can donate through Bitcoin without a credit card. |
