Bitcoin's Black Friday

Bitcoin's Black Friday

This Friday is the Black Friday for foreigners, which also means that Bitcoin's Black Friday is about to kick off. More than 150 online merchants will offer special discounts to Bitcoin users. Consumers will be able to use Bitcoin to buy their holiday gifts.

Bitcoin Black Friday is an event launched by Bitcoin evangelist Jon Holmquist in 2012. Every year, many companies and Bitcoin investors participate in this event. With the joint efforts of the Bitcoin community, this event has continued to this day.

Discounted items will include comics, hot sauce, VPNs, consoles, T-shirts, diamond jewelry, watches, art, beef jerky, and more. The Bitcoin Black Friday website provides consumers with tools on how to participate in the holiday shopping spree.

Holmquist said:

"It is the autonomous right of online merchants to accept Bitcoin, and it can bring many consumers to the merchants."

Last year’s Bitcoin Black Friday event had 600 participating merchants. According to BitPay, last year’s number of participating merchants increased by 82% compared to the year before.

Last year set a sales record

BitPay noticed a shift in consumer spending patterns from 2013 to 2014. In 2013, consumers were primarily purchasing Bitcoin mining equipment, while in 2014, spending on traditional e-commerce goods increased.

According to BitPay, Gyft and Newegg all achieved good sales on Bitcoin Black Friday in 2014. Amagi Metals also received a high number of Bitcoin orders on that day. In addition, Tigerdirect, Namecheap and Adafruit also achieved quite good results.

Holmquist said:

“I’m a huge fan of Newegg and I’m really happy to see a major merchant like this participating in Bitcoin Black Friday.”

Will the New Year set a new record?

Holmquist told CCN that this year there will be more merchants offering discounts specifically for Bitcoin users, and the variety of goods will be greater. The goal of this year's event is to break last year's record, and 10,000 Bitcoin users have already set up reminders for the event that day.

“This year, our focus is on targeting merchants who are actively engaging with Bitcoin. In addition to sending email reminders to merchants, Bitcoin Black Friday events have been announced on major forums and subreddits. We are also actively calling on consumers to list their favorite Bitcoin merchants and ask them to sign up.”

Most participating merchants are based in the United States, but there are also some international merchants participating every year.

Merchants participating in the event

Elyse Petersen, a Bitcoin merchant (Tealet), said:

“Bitcoin Black Friday is one of the most active business events on our site throughout the year and we are excited to be a part of this event that showcases the true value and power of the Bitcoin network.”
