RBA Governor Stevens Encourages Banks to Explore Blockchain Technology

格伦•史蒂文斯, governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, the country's central bank, recently expressed his views on blockchain technology during a wide-ranging dialogue on the economic outlook for countries in the Asia-Pacific region in 2016.

In an interview with local media, Stevens expressed support for domestic banks in Australia to explore distributed ledger technology (blockchain technology) and take advantage of the advantages of blockchain technology.

He said:

“Blockchain is really the bright spot behind Bitcoin in my opinion.”

And added:

“We have been using centralized ledger technology for many years, so we should understand whether distributed ledgers can be more efficient and less costly.”

Stevens went on to note that domestic businesses are seeking answers to these questions, a process he called "important" and "fascinating."

Stevens is an advocate of a wide range of new financial technologies, and he believes regulators would be willing to help the development of potentially innovative technologies.

The blockchain industry is also increasingly viewing Australia as one of the first markets most likely to adopt blockchain technology.

During a panel discussion at Finnovasia last week, WIP Solutions CEO Alex Edana predicted that “Australia will be the first market for blockchain in the next three to five years.” This is not without reason, as several major Australian banks have joined the ranks of trialing blockchain this year, such as the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Westpac Banking Corporation.

In 2014, the Reserve Bank of Australia published a survey report stating that Bitcoin is unlikely to shake the domestic payment system, and Stevens' recent remarks seem to hint at the Reserve Bank of Australia's latest views on Bitcoin.
