Hyperledger welcomes 10 new companies including Blockstream

The open source Hyperledger blockchain project led by the Linux Foundation has welcomed 10 new companies, including bitcoin protocol development company Blockstream.

Other new startups focusing on Bitcoin and blockchain services include Bloq, eVue Digital Labs, Gem, itBit and Ribbit.me.

Consulting firm Milligan Partners, payments software developer Montran Labs, intellectual property holding company Tequa Creek Holdings and global news service Thomson Reuters have also joined the blockchain initiative, which was officially launched in December last year.

Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, said in a statement:

“The opportunity is tremendous, and the community input from this leadership team and members of the industry puts this project in the best possible position to accomplish its mission.”

The project also officially launched a board of directors, chaired by Blythe Masters, CEO of blockchain startup Digital Asset Holdings (DAH). The Hyperledger project also formed a technical steering committee, which has held several meetings so far.

Other council members include itBit CEO Charles Cascarilla, IBM VP of blockchain technology Jerry Cuomo, and JPMorgan Chase’s head of new product development and emerging technologies Santiago Suarez.

With this announcement, 40 companies have now joined the Hyperledger project, which also announced in February that it had added a number of financial firms and blockchain startups.

So far, the project has seen some progress, including demonstrations from JPMorgan Chase and Intel, which has developed an internal blockchain application focused on the virtual sports market.

The Hyperledger Technical Steering Committee is close to formally approving a merger of code contributions from Blockstream, Digital Asset Holdings (DAH), and IBM.
