OpenBazaar network first appeared drug list, how to avoid "going down the dark web market path" has become the key

OpenBazaar, the open source peer-to-peer marketplace software, has officially launched, marking an important milestone for the project.

OpenBazaar uses Bitcoin as a payment method and aims to create a decentralized version of Taobao. In the traditional model, the central entity acts as a currency clearing center and an arbitrator of behavior. In contrast, OpenBazaar uses the distributed Bitcoin blockchain to process payments. Users can act as referees to resolve disputes or rent their own mediators.

However, within hours of its launch, it appeared that drug transactions were already occurring on the OpenBazaar network.

Two sellers advertised marijuana purchases (one of which was not active at press time), while another merchant that previously sold marijuana seeds has also been taken offline. BazaarBay.org, the OpenBazaar listing tracking tool, also lists some items as having been removed.

The big question is: Are they the real deal?

Brian Hoffman, project lead at OB1, the startup overseeing development of the OpenBazaar protocol, told CoinDesk that the team is aware of the listings, which he said are coming from two sources: legitimate vendors taking a chance on OpenBazaar and trying to sell their illegal wares, or troublemakers looking to stir up trouble.

He continued:

“We continue to plan to create ways for users to have more control over their experience on the web, but unfortunately there will always be people who choose to disrupt or ruin the experience for others. We will continue to look for more ways to mitigate these challenges.”

The OpenBazaar project has long been compared to the defunct Silk Road, a dark web marketplace. As a distributed marketplace, OpenBazaar will undoubtedly be very resilient because it has no central point of failure.

Although the OpenBazaar protocol development team has emphasized in the past that they are also agnostic about the open source protocol, the emergence of these illegal items has undoubtedly exacerbated this contrast.
