Tokyo Stock Exchange operator joins Nomura Research Institute’s blockchain trial project

Rage Comment : The Tokyo Stock Exchange is one of the four largest stock exchanges in the world and the most important economic center in Japan. Nomura Research Institute is a representative of Japanese think tanks, and its influence is prominent in Japan and even the world. Nomura Research Institute has successively cooperated with Nomura Securities, SBI Sumishin Net Bank, and Tokyo Stock Exchange to explore blockchain technology in the securities industry. In the next stage, SBI Securities and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group will also participate. I believe that among the many independent blockchain technology research in Japan, the large-scale cooperation of this well-known institution will open up a bright road.

The operator of the Tokyo Stock Exchange has teamed up with Japan’s top think tank in a month-long exploration of blockchain technology.

The pilot project was announced by Nomura Research Institute (NRI), which also revealed that the Japan Exchange Group is using the project as part of its blockchain research. As an early user of IBM's "blockchain as a service" platform, the Japan Exchange Group has been conducting blockchain application trials.

NRI announced that during the testing phase, it will “assess the challenges and usability of blockchain before applying it to the securities market.”

The project focuses particularly on commercial application cases and aims to develop a professional blockchain prototype for securities market applications.

Minoru Yokote

NRI Senior Executive Director Minoru Yokote said:

“As the industry continues to focus on blockchain’s potential to improve technology and industry operations, we are committed to identifying the challenges and potential benefits of applying blockchain technology to future applications in the securities industry.”

NRI has already started collaborating on blockchain applications since October last year, when the institute announced partnerships with Nomura Securities and SBI Sumishin Net Bank.

In the next phase, the think tank of major Japanese financial holding company Nomura Holdings, a subsidiary of Nomura Holdings, will work with SBI Securities and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.
