Editor's note: Stephan Tual is the founder and COO of Slock.it, an Ethereum-based IoT platform that aims to bring the benefits of blockchain to real-world objects. Microsoft's Azure Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) solution has also added it as a partner. Before discovering blockchain, Stephan held CTO positions at VISA Europe and BP. Unbeknownst to many, we’ve been spending months engaging with the major cryptocurrency exchanges on the market to raise awareness of the importance of supporting smart contracts, ‘meta coins’, DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations), and other types of digital assets on the Ethereum network, and today we’re proud to announce the results of that work. Kraken, Gatecoin, Bity, ShapeShift and Bittrex will all support this open source standard DAO framework and add varying degrees of support for data fields in their Ethereum transactions. This means that users of these exchanges can now call functions through these smart contracts, in other words, they can directly create DAO tokens and interact with them through the exchange's own interface. It may not seem like a lot of work, but this 'data zone' will make a big difference (Source: Kraken) Kraken — Now there is a universal data zone that can interact with anything on the Ethereum blockchain. Gatecoin - has a universal data zone that can be set through their API. Bity — has implemented a specific workflow for the upcoming DAO and we will submit a proposal that will allow you to create DAO tokens yourself on the Bity website. ShapeShift — Despite their recent reorganization, ShapeShift has become a huge star, and the company comes with a special API-Key for their workflow, which makes the target address available for calling the createTokenProxy() function. Here’s a really cool feature of the DAO creation module we built, which is 100% open source: future DAO token holders will be able to create DAO tokens without needing a pre-existing Ethereum account, which means they will be able to create and manage their DAO tokens directly on an exchange. This small, but crucial upgrade demonstrates the commitment of these exchanges to pioneering the implementation of Ethereum decentralized applications (Ðapps). We would be happy to help other exchanges implement this functionality, just contact [email protected].
