A transaction lost 291 BTC in fees. This Bitcoin mining pool is looking for you

Today, a Bitcoin transaction with a fee of up to 291BTC (worth about $136,700) was included in the 409,008 block of the Bitcoin network. This abnormal transaction has also triggered a lot of speculation in the Bitcoin community.

Currently, the average cost of processing a transaction on the Bitcoin network is approximately 9,040 satoshis (about $0.04 at press time).

Currently, Bitcoin mining pool BitClub (which operates two mining farms in Iceland) has sent information to users via email and asserted that it mined this block. BitClub said it received a total of 316 BTC (about $147,000), which is equivalent to the transaction fee of this transaction plus the 25 BTC block network reward.

However, the mining pool said in an email that it is willing to refund these transaction fees if users can prove their identity.

BitClub wrote:

“We are currently waiting for the owner to contact us and admit their mistake so that we can verify them and return the bitcoins to them, but so far no one has been able to verify their identity.”

Brock Pierce, president of the Bitcoin Foundation, told reporters that BitClub had contacted the industry group and would donate some of the funds if the owner of the lost coins did not resurface after a week.

“We would like to provide a portion of the funds to Bitcoin Core development, as well as other allocation options that benefit the entire community,” BitClub said in an email.

The mining pool said it had been researching the transaction and believed it may have been sent by a bitcoin mixer, an online service that aims for privacy and anonymity but is often associated with illicit uses.

BitClub did not respond to a request for further comment by press time.
