IBM opens blockchain garage in New York

Rage Review : Earlier this month, IBM announced the establishment of the Watson Center in Marina Boy, Singapore, aiming to provide an office space for 5,000 computer scientists in the Asia-Pacific region, and last week IBM announced that Mizuho Financial Group has successfully tested a settlement system based on digital currency blockchain in the newly established IBM Garage in Tokyo. Now IBM has announced the opening of a new office for blockchain coders in New York to expand its influence in the blockchain industry.

IBM has announced the opening of a new office for blockchain coders in New York, a city better known for its art fairs and boutiques than its computer programmers.

Headquartered in Galvanize's SoHo office, the workspace is IBM's Bluemix Garages, a studio that provides workplaces for technology consulting services.

The office opening comes as the company seeks to expand its expertise in the blockchain industry.

Earlier this month, IBM announced the opening of its Watson Center in Singapore’s Marina Boy, which aims to provide a home for 5,000 computer scientists in the Asia-Pacific region and is also home to the IBM Garage.

Last week, IBM announced that Mizuho Financial Group had successfully tested a settlement system based on the digital currency blockchain at the newly established IBM Garage in Tokyo.

Blockchain in the cloud

These garages, and others in San Francisco, London, Toronto and Nice, are part of an industry-wide race among cloud computing providers to capitalize on their interest in blockchain.

For example, last month, Amazon’s cloud service provider announced that it would provide a blockchain testing environment for enterprises, and in March, Microsoft’s cloud computing service provider added five blockchain startups to its blockchain service platform.

According to data provided by IBM itself, about 20,000 developers are added to its Bluemix cloud platform every week.
