UN Sustainable Development Conference studies the use of blockchain technology to achieve sustainable development goals

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development will discuss blockchain today.

The meeting in New York will focus on how public-private partnerships can use blockchain technology (among other tools) to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, according to a United Nations agenda. The event is being organized by diplomatic missions from Bangladesh and El Salvador, the United World Governance and Competitiveness Organization and Saint Peter’s University in New Jersey.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 aims to focus on a variety of areas, ranging from inclusive, transparent governments and fair justice systems. Some specific calls for action include ' providing legal identity for all by 2030, including birth registration, ' ' developing efficient, auditable and transparent institutions at all levels ' and ' substantially reducing corruption and bribery in all their forms '.

Notably, blockchain technology has slowly attracted the attention of the United Nations over the past year because of its ability to provide new solutions within and beyond the financial industry.

Last month, a research institute funded by the United Nations revealed that they are studying a large number of blockchain projects. The UN agency focused on helping poor children has begun to fund related projects. Although the specific use cases covered by the conference theme are not yet clear, blockchain has long been considered an important enabler for changing management and identity.

Organizers of the event had no immediate comment.
