WikiLeaks Bitcoin Donations Have Officially Exceeded 4,000 BTC

The decentralized nature of Bitcoin makes it independent of traditional banking and payment systems. This is why WikiLeaks accepts cryptocurrency payments as the main form of donations on its website. The whistleblower website founded by Julian Assange has been publishing information that is invisible to governments, which affects their use of banking services.

A few years ago, credit card payment service providers such as PayPal and Valitor briefly stopped providing services to WikiLeaks and froze the platform's account. WikiLeaks began accepting Bitcoin donations on June 15, 2011. As of yesterday, the Bitcoin wallet account of WikiLeaks has successfully received more than 4,000 BTC, worth about $2.9 million.

The WikiLeaks donation wallet address shows a total of 25,480 transactions, with an average transaction size of $114. In addition to Bitcoin, WikiLeaks also accepts donations via credit cards, PayPal, Litecoin, Google Checkout, Cheques, and bank transfers. All donations received by WikiLeaks are used to fund the technical infrastructure to keep the platform online. In addition to server and other costs, the funds are also used to pay salaries for some WikiLeaks personnel, including Assange.

With the exception of four or five people, most of the people on WikiLeaks work for free. In many cases, WikiLeaks has been publishing large amounts of classified and leaked documents, revealing the activities of government organizations, the military, politicians and sometimes even businesses.

WikiLeaks has bravely served as a voice for democracy and media freedom, while revealing important evidence pointing to authoritarian rule and questionable activities of governments that could have far-reaching consequences for diplomatic, political and military relations. As WikiLeaks continues to uncover dirty secrets, the platform's owners have become targets of sanctions. Assange is currently seeking refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in the UK to protect himself from extradition to the United States to face trial.

As long as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies exist, platforms like WikiLeaks will always have a certain immunity to the hegemony of government agencies.
