Mysterious organization releases video of Kim Jong-nam's son, says it only accepts Bitcoin donations

Kim Han-sol, whose father Kim Jong-nam is the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was assassinated by the North Korean government in Malaysia last month. Yesterday, a 39-second video released by the mysterious organization "Cheollima Civil Defense" was circulated on YouTube.

A man claiming to be Kim Jong-nam's son Kim Han-sol appeared in the video. In terms of appearance, he was very similar to Kim Han-sol when he was interviewed by former Finnish Defense Minister Elisabeth Rehn in 2012.

The "Kim Han-sol" in the video spoke in English and provided an official North Korean passport as proof of his identity (his personal information was blacked out).

"I'm from North Korea, my name is Kim Han-sol, and I'm a member of the Kim family," he said in the video. "My father was killed a few days ago, and I'm currently staying with my mother and sister... We hope the situation will get better soon."

In the statement, Kim Han-sol mentioned that the "Chelima Civil Defense" organization received humanitarian assistance from the Netherlands, China, the United States and a fourth government that could not be disclosed.

As of now, the Dutch Embassy in Seoul has declined CNN's request for comment, and representatives of China and the United States did not immediately respond to reporters' requests for comment.

It is reported that Kim Han-sol was born in Pyongyang, North Korea, but the 21-year-old has spent most of his life living abroad, mainly in Macau, China, France and Bosnia.

An official from South Korea's National Intelligence Service, who asked not to be named, said he had confirmed that the person in the video was Kim Han-song, but did not specify the basis for his determination.

However, South Korea's Unification Ministry, a government agency, said it was unaware of what the Chollima Civil Defense organization was. The website where the video was originally posted was registered on Saturday and used a Panama-based protection service to mask ownership of the website address.

"Cheollima" means a winged divine horse in East Asian folklore. According to the organization's website, the purpose of "Cheollima Civil Defense" is to help high-level officials who have fled North Korea hide their footprints on the Internet, such as Kim Han-song. The website also encourages others to join the organization. In addition, it is interesting that this website currently only accepts Bitcoin donations because trading Bitcoin will not reveal their whereabouts.
