Bitcoin smart contract security expert proposes new Bitcoin expansion solution

On March 31, Bitcoin blockchain smart contract security expert Sergio Demian Lerner proposed a new Bitcoin expansion solution, which is considered to be a compromise between Segwit and Bitcoin Unlimited.

Lerner’s proposal, called Segwit2MB, seeks to combine the advantages of Bitcoin’s hard fork with those of its soft fork to address some of the “rampant politics” that have emerged in the debate over Bitcoin’s scaling.

Lerner elaborated on these ideas in a group email published on March 31:

“Segwit2Mb is a project to merge Bitcoin scaling solutions into a minimal patch that aims to resolve the current conflict between different political positions regarding Segregated Witness (Segwit) activation and increase the link space of the Bitcoin blockchain through a standard block size. This is not exactly a new solution, but it should be seen as an unusual attempt.”

Lerner went on to explain the technical content of Segwit2MB, saying that Segwit2MB still uses the basic Bitcoin protocol, but it adds a 2MB block size that will only be triggered when Segregated Witness (Segwit) is activated. He believes that 95% of miners will support this change together in the near future.

Response to Lerner's tweet was mixed, with most believing such a compromise would only cause continued tensions.

——Segwit2MB opponents said in emails and Twitter replies that Lerner did not seem to understand the real reason for the Bitcoin hard fork, and his plan would only muddy the waters. They suggested that Lerner start from the cause of the matter and see how people have been studying and promoting the development of Bitcoin hard forks.

——Segwit2MB supporters believe that Lerner’s plan will make segregated witness faster and allow users to obtain a suitable basic block size in the short and medium term; and Segwit2MB will make all objections unsustainable. Supporters even believe that this is the most likely way to end the Bitcoin expansion dispute.

Despite Lerner’s attempts at compromise, members of the Bitcoin community do not seem ready to give up their views. Many of them are still concerned about a Bitcoin hard fork, even if SegWit is activated.

The debate may not disappear because of this, but it is also very inspiring as a compromise attempt. The emergence of Segwit2MB also provides a new possibility for solving the problem.
