Electric Power Research Institute: Cryptocurrency mining uses less than 0.1% of global electricity consumption

According to coindesk, at a cryptocurrency hearing held by the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee today, Thomas Golden, manager of the Electric Power Research Institute's Technology Innovation Project, said that networks that rely on proof of work, such as the Bitcoin blockchain, usually require a lot of energy. Public blockchains may use one to five gigawatts of electricity worldwide, but Golden said this is less than 0.1% of global electricity consumption.
