Canaan Creative plans to develop 5nm chips while expanding IoT devices

Canaan Creative, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency mining hardware manufacturer, has announced the launch of a new mining device, the Avalonminer A911, while the company plans to develop mining heaters and portable mining equipment. The company also reportedly revealed its intention to develop 5nm mining chips.

Canaan Creative announces new mining rig Avalon A911

Hangzhou-based Canaan Creative recently announced a series of new product plans at the Chengdu Mining Summit, including the launch of a new mining rig, the Avalon A911.

Canaan’s Avalon sales director Chen Feng said the company’s latest miners will offer a maximum hash rate of 18TH/s, consume 1440W of power and run at 80W per hour. The A911 will also be powered by Canaan’s recently launched 7nm mining chips.

Canaan will develop 5nm chips?

Just two months after showing off its new 7nm mining chips, Canaan has reportedly announced that it will be looking to develop 5nm mining chips.

Previously, TSMC, the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer, announced in June that it plans to start trialing its "5nm FinFET process technology" in the second half of 2019, with the goal of achieving mass production in 2020. At the time, Reuters reported that the company expected to invest $25 billion to develop the technology.

Compared to TSMC’s 7nm chips, the company’s planned 5nm chips will use extreme ultraviolet lithography “for more critical layers to reduce multi-patterning process complexity while enabling greater die area scaling.”

New Canaan products seek to expand IoT devices

Chen Feng also announced that Canaan plans to launch several new products in an attempt to further integrate its advanced computing technology into home appliances, including a cloud computing heater and a mobile mining farm called the "Avalon Box." Canaan will also develop an artificial intelligence chip called Kendryte.

The world’s first Bitcoin mining TV, Avalonminer Inside, was unveiled at a press conference in Hangzhou on August 8. The TV was unveiled along with the company’s 7nm mining chip.
