What is CKB that was mined on the test network?

Yesterday, mining pools such as F2Pool, SparkPool, and UUPool announced their support for Nervos CKB testnet mining. Major mining software also announced their support for CKB mining. So what exactly is CKB?

About Nervos

Nervos is a smart contract platform (public chain). Different from other public chains, in the system architecture of Nervos, the public chain is divided into Layer 1 and Layer 2. Layer 1 focuses on the security and decentralization of assets, while performance, scalability and other issues are left to Layer 2. Nervos highlights layering and takes the second-layer network expansion as its signature

Nervos proposed a layered expansion solution for blockchain, clearly stating that Layer 1 focuses on security and Layer 2 focuses on performance. Not all consensus needs to reach a global consensus, nor should a public chain be used to carry all the computing and storage in the world. Individual applications or scenarios can run on Layer 2 through local consensus. Layer 1 only provides the most basic global consensus, supporting off-chain computing and on-chain verification.

The full name of Nervos' Layer 1 is Nervos Common Knowledge Base, or Nervos CKB for short, and its native token is Common Knowledge Byte, or CK Byte for short. Nervos CKB uses the same PoW consensus mechanism as Bitcoin , and the hash algorithm is a customized Eaglesong algorithm. The design goal is to be simple, secure, and ASIC-neutral, thereby avoiding the centralization of mining.

In the design of Nervos, Nervos CKB focuses on the simplest, most stable, and non-replaceable general storage structure. The native Token CK Byte represents the Cell space . Cell is the most basic state storage unit in Nervos CKB. The Cell model inherits the high parallelism of the Bitcoin UTXO model and brings the scalability and programmability that Bitcoin lacks. Users can include any state in it, including storage assets, DApp status, or other types of data. In other words, Cell can store various general data, not just transaction data .

Layer 2 focuses on performance

In Nervos' vision, there may be hundreds or thousands of AppChains running on Layer 2 in the future. Each AppChain is an independent chain, which can be a private chain, a consortium chain, a public chain, or even a state channel or an Internet company's database . According to its own business needs, AppChain can choose different technical solutions and adopt other more efficient consensus algorithms to reach local consensus, and only write the most important data to the first-layer basic public chain Nervos CKB. If there is a dispute or node malicious behavior in the AppChain of Layer 2, such as double spending, wrong transaction packaging, etc., the first-layer Nervos CKB will assume the role of the final arbitrator.

Huobi and Nervos collaborate to launch public blockchain

On June 30, 2019, the Nervos Foundation and Huobi Group jointly announced the launch of the "Financial Public Chain". The two parties will fully cooperate in public chain technology, DeFi services, layered architecture, etc.

Currently, CKB is still a test network . CKB has held three mining competitions. The fourth mining competition is about to start (September 7). All major mining pools will also participate in this mining competition. The coins mined are CKB test network coins. However, the mined test coins can be exchanged for real CKB on the main network in proportion when the CKB main network is launched.
