A man in Wuxi kept 13 Bitcoin mining machines in a sports stadium and stole more than 40,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity

During the epidemic, many venues of Wuxi Jiangyin Sports Center were out of service, but maintenance staff found that electricity consumption increased instead of decreased. After careful investigation, the staff found that under the floor of the weak current room in the basement of the center, several graphics card machines that were not used by the venue were running, and they immediately called 110 to report the incident.

After investigation, the police found that these devices were "mining machines" used to "mine" online virtual currencies. Each device consumed more than 20 degrees of electricity per day. The "miners" reduced costs and made profits by stealing electricity.

Under pressure, Jiao recently turned himself in to the public security authorities. Since the end of 2018, Jiao has installed 13 "Ethereum mining machines" in swimming pools, sports centers, and old stadiums, stealing public electricity for "mining."

According to the investigation, Jiao has stolen more than 40,000 kWh of electricity from the state over the past year, worth more than 20,000 yuan, constituting the crime of theft. Currently, Jiao has been released on bail pending trial, and the case is still under further investigation. (Hu Yan)
