Announcement: Qitmeer —MedinaNetwork is about to upgrade

Qitmeer's official public test network, Medina Network, has been running stably for more than five months since it went online on December 30, 2019. The current stable computing power of the entire network is about 2400kGPS, which is equivalent to the computing power of about 3,000 P106-8 card mining machines running simultaneously.

According to the original development plan of Qitmeer public test network, Medina Network will be upgraded from the end of May to the beginning of June 2020. At that time, Qitmeer network will be upgraded to qitmeer-0.9.0 version and enter the Medina Network 2.0 period. The main contents of this upgrade include: upgrading the DAG difficulty adjustment algorithm, unlocking the large-graph mode of the cuckoo ring algorithm, and adding a new PoW algorithm (Qitmeer-keccak256) to enhance the security and stability of the chain.

1. DAG difficulty adjustment algorithm upgrade:

The old difficulty adjustment method mainly adjusts the difficulty based on the number of blocks obtained by the main chain. It is impossible to count the number of concurrencies on the main chain, and the difficulty adjustment is not sensitive enough, resulting in too many blocks in some extreme cases. This upgrade adds support for the calculation of the concurrency of the BlockDAG network, and incorporates the concurrency into the consideration of difficulty adjustment to improve the stability of the DAG network's block production, which will help improve the security of the chain. Secondly, due to the addition of the PoW algorithm, the proportion of different algorithms will be included in the difficulty adjustment factors to balance the block production ratio of each party.

2. Unlock the large picture mode of the Cuckoo Ring algorithm:

In the early stage of Medina Network, a pure small-graph mode with a low entry threshold (edge_bits=24) was adopted. After this upgrade, a large-graph mode with a higher entry threshold and more efficient GPU utilization (edge_bits=29) will be unlocked. The large-graph mode not only has a more mature GPU optimization solution, which makes GPU utilization higher, but also promotes a more even distribution of computing power, making the computing power of different devices relatively more balanced. To mine in the large-graph mode, a graphics card with at least 6G or more video memory is required. It is recommended to use an N card that supports cuda.

3. New PoW algorithm:

The newly added PoW algorithm is the Qitmeer-keccak256 algorithm, which is FPGA-friendly. The support of the new algorithm will help introduce a wider group of miners to the Qitmeer network, while alleviating the volatility of GPU miners and enhancing computing power loyalty and network stability.

Qitmeer is a public blockchain network that is gradually moving towards maturity. On the road of exploration, we would like to thank all parties for their participation and support. Here, Qitmeer would like to remind everyone that the upgrade of the Qitmeer network requires data clearing, so all participating nodes need to be upgraded to the latest version - qitmeer-0.9.0. Due to the change in the data structure of the new version, the old version qitmeer-0.8.5 will not be compatible with the new version. Therefore, please be sure to update your nodes to qitmeer-0.9.0 in time, otherwise you will not be able to continue to work with the Qitmeer network.

Regarding asset inheritance, the asset balance will be liquidated based on the ledger at the height of the "last stable block" before the upgrade , and the assets will be inherited to the qitmeer-0.9.0 version based on this, marking the beginning of the Medina Network 2.0 era!

Specific update time:

Because asset inheritance is of great importance, we will carefully combine the opinions of the community and technical parties to finally determine the "last stable block" before the upgrade, and use this block height as the cutoff height for asset settlement. The asset balance generated after the "last stable block" before the upgrade will not be included in the inheritance statistics. Please be aware of this and update to qitmeer0.9.0 in a timely manner. The cutoff block height and version update time will be notified to everyone in advance to obtain wider support and feedback from the community.
