According to The Guardian, the criminals behind Iceland’s “Big Bitcoin Heist” case have escaped from prison and have made their way to Sweden. The criminal, Sindri Thor Stefansson, is alleged to have stolen more than $2 million in at least four separate thefts between December 2017 and January 2018, using 600 cryptocurrency mining machines. Incredibly, Sindri Thor Stefansson fled to Sweden on the same flight as the Prime Minister of Iceland. According to previous reports, Icelandic police have arrested another 22 potential accomplices in the theft of cryptocurrency mining machines, but it is not clear how many people are still in custody. The case is the largest theft and robbery in Iceland's history. The police called it a "highly organized crime" and the coordination and cooperation between criminal networks has reached an unprecedented scale. Iceland's local police chief Gunnar Schram revealed that Sindri Thor Stefansson may have escaped with the help of others, and an accomplice assisted him in leaving the prison and heading to the airport about 60 miles away. The Guardian further reported that the stolen mining machines have not been found to date, and the original owner has offered a reward of $60,000 in the hope of locating their specific location. |
