10 million anonymous wallets affected

Online wallets such as those provided by Yandex, WebMoney, PayPal and Kiwi are very popular in Russia. These wallets serve about 10 million users who use their accounts to top up cash anonymously. Although the exact number is unknown, some people use these anonymous wallets to buy cryptocurrencies.

Experts say the impact will be minimal

RBK quoted economist Antonina Levashenko as saying that the measures will not initially have an impact on the blockchain sector. However, as Russia strengthens its anti-money laundering procedures, the existing ban may eventually apply to virtual currencies as well.

Maria Stankevich, business development manager at cryptocurrency exchange EXMO, believes that the ban may only have an impact on exchanges that do not take compliance seriously. She believes that the demand for such services may decline as a result.
