The police arrested two local male suspects yesterday (18), aged 36 and 38 respectively, who reported being unemployed. The police said the fraudsters posted photos of luxurious life, such as luxury cars and money, on the Internet to deceive investors into believing it was true. In addition, the fraudsters posted on multiple channels under different identities, saying that they could apply for a one-year Lantau Island restricted area permit for HK$9,800, which included the ability to travel to places such as Mui Wo and Cheung Sha for sightseeing.
After the victim believed the scam, in addition to the direct monetary loss, he was also threatened by the scammers because he had handed over his personal information. The scammers then extorted several thousand to 80,000 yuan from the victim, warning that the victim's personal information would be made public if he did not pay.
Senior Inspector Lo Ai-kin said that the criminal group had been operating for about several months. There were 22 victims in the case, aged between 16 and 56, including students and professionals. The highest loss of a single victim in the case was 2.5 million yuan, involving investment in Bitcoin. She reminded the public to beware of false information online, especially high investment returns, and must clearly understand before paying.
