More than half of people have not moved their ETH in the past 12 months

Over half of Ethereum’s supply has remained unchanged over the past year, with just 39.6% of all ETH changing hands in the past 12 months.

According to Glassnode, which breaks down the velocity of on-chain transactions chronologically, approximately 28% of all ether was last moved in the past 12 to 24 months, which is the largest portion of on-chain activity.
Data suggests that many whales spent 2019’s Ether ahead of the project’s ETH 2.0 upgrade, Phase 0 of which is expected to begin in the coming months, allowing users to stake their Ether funds for the first time.
About 20% of tokens have not moved since October 2017, with analysts watching to see if some of these tokens entered staking as Phase 0 rolls out.
The upcoming Phase 0 launch appears to have inspired a recent increase in the short-term velocity of on-chain transfers, with the share of Ether moved in the past 24 hours increasing from less than 0.5% in January and February to over 1%.
The weekly rate also rose from 1.5% at the start of the year to 5% in July and September, while monthly and quarterly transfers have also grown steadily since June.
In contrast, Bitcoin’s short-term on-chain velocity has declined significantly since the pre-halving hype and the “Black Thursday” crash in early 2020.
