Not long ago, Filecoin officials took us through a review of Filecoin in 2020. Next, let us look forward to Filecoin in 2021. With the joint efforts of everyone, the Filecoin network will surely get better and better.

On December 19, 2020, the Filecoin network experienced an outage. There was a window period when new blocks could be created but miners were unable to synchronize in the result phase, resulting in different calculation results for each. Thanks to the quick response of the entire community members, miners, and developers. The mainnet was restored within seven hours.

Since December 4, 2020, 1,392 new miners have joined the network. Welcome! With the joint efforts of 573 storage providers and 616 customers, the network has generated 751,106 valid transactions and 3PiB of data storage.

This year we expect nodes running three other applications to join, making our network more secure and decentralized. So far, Venus nodes have been running stably on the mainnet.

Lotus version 1.4.1 will be released later this week. This will be an optional update and will include the following:

Add SectorTerminate/SectorTerminateFlush to terminate local and on-chain parts
Improve multi-core AddPrice CommP, the speed will be increased by 7.76 times (#5320)
Improve UX and error messages when deducting funds from market balance (#5303)
Can add funds to market balances across multiple transactions to save gas (#5125)

In addition, the lotus team is also developing a mandatory update version that will be released early next month. This update will integrate proof6.0.0 and spec-actor version 3, and will also have some new features and optimizations including a smarter public storage transaction mechanism and allowing the msig wallet to become the miner's own address.

We have also added a contribution guide for lotus on git, and we hope to attract more developers to contribute code.

The Spec-actor team is preparing for the release of v3, an improved version that integrates v3 AMT/HAMT will provide better performance and security. Other new features will support offline Window PoST verification, this FIP will reduce the SubmitWindowedPoSt information fee in the long run, and the synchronization speed will also be faster.

After the release of version 6.0.0, the team will improve the mainnet as a whole and do some code optimization. The team is developing pure OpenCL batch hasing, which will bring twice the efficiency improvement and significantly reduce GPU memory usage. The team is also studying the working mechanism of ZCash's Halo2 and exploring how to use it in the next generation of knowledge proof.

Ecosystem

In December 2020, Fenbushi Capital cooperated with the official team to invest 15 million US dollars in the IPFS and Filecoin ecosystems, with the goal of promoting the development of the IPFS ecosystem.

In 2021, we expect more applications with practical scenarios like file.Video developed by liverpeer to appear. Only they can promote the Filecoin mainnet to store human digital information. Due to budgetary constraints, the Filecoin Dev Grant program, which was originally scheduled to end on January 15, will be extended to the end of the first quarter of 2021. Everyone can apply. There are proposals for miner support tools, storage clients, and blockchain analysis tools. Of course, you can also propose your own unique project.

Community and more

In December, we launched the Filecoin MinerX Fellowship project, which aims to attract a series of small-scale miner groups to build a solid global distributed storage, help customers fix bugs, and improve the miner experience. Now the list of statistics is nearing completion, and the project will start in a few weeks.

In addition, we hope to see more community participation and autonomy in the Filecoin+notary project and FIPs, and welcome various questions and suggestions.
