Gas fees have been a problem for Filecoin officials and miners for a long time. Recently, the Filecoin network has spent almost 16-20 FIL for every 1TB of effective computing power. If a miner adds 1PB of effective computing power, it will cost at least 16,000 FIL, of which gas fees account for almost half of the miner's expenditure. Gas fees are equivalent to the "fuel" of the Filecoin network and are directly used for destruction. This means that if a miner adds 1PB of effective computing power every day, according to the current network conditions, about 8,000 FIL will be burned every day. In the face of rising gas fees, Filecoin officials have also given solutions many times: In November 2020, Filecoin officially implemented the FIP-5 proposal, which is committed to removing expensive miner reward attribution calculations from PreCommitSector and ConfirmSectorProofsValid, thereby effectively reducing gas fee consumption, freeing up chain bandwidth and reducing miner costs. In mid-to-late December 2020, Filecoin officially implemented the FIP-9 proposal, the main content of which is to exempt the baseFee for the successful execution of SubmitWindowedPoSt. That is, if miners do not add computing power but only maintain the original computing power, they will hardly consume gas fees. On January 14, 2021, Filecoin officially proposed the FIP-0010 proposal. FIP-0010 is a proposal that uses off-chain WindowPoSt verification, which means that WindowPoSt can be put on the chain without verification. Later, the off-chain verifier can call DisputeWindowedPoSt for verification.
In general, after the implementation of the FIP-9 proposal, the gas fees for miners to maintain their original computing power have indeed been effectively reduced. However, in the Filecoin network, the gas fees for the newly added effective computing power are the "big head". Therefore, Filecoin officials have proposed the FIP-0010 proposal , hoping to reduce gas fees by verifying WindowPoSt off-chain. FIP-0010 is actually a proposal that has major changes at the Filecoin consensus level. After all, the way of verifying WindowPoSt off-chain is somewhat different from Filecoin's consensus mechanism. So, it is unknown whether the FIP-0010 proposal can be implemented smoothly and as soon as possible, and whether the gas fee can be truly reduced after its implementation. However, given the current high gas fees, miners should become the “game changers” themselves rather than pinning their hopes on the authorities. New 64GB sector solution reduces gas fees by 50% While devoting itself to the ecological construction of IPFS, Spacetime Cloud has continuously increased its investment in the research and development of new technologies. It has made breakthrough progress in improving packaging efficiency and reducing packaging costs. Not long ago, the latest 64GB sector packaging technology solution has passed the test and officially launched a new node, becoming the first miner in the world to use 64GB sectors in Filecoin. The new node "f0127595" built by Spacetime Cloud using 64GB sectors has completed the packaging of nearly 7PiB of effective computing power, and the actual gas consumption has been reduced by more than 50%. Why can 64GB sectors reduce gas? Comparing Filecoin to a toll highway, then the car traveling on the highway is a whole unit. Whether there are one or two people in the car, they have to pay the same toll. We can understand the toll as the gas fee. A 32GB sector is actually equivalent to a car with only one person in it, and a 64GB sector is equivalent to a car with two people in it. Obviously, the highway fee for a car with two people is half of the highway fee for a car with one person in it. Therefore, the gas fee consumed by a 64GB sector is half of the gas fee consumed by a 32GB sector. Seeing this, some people may ask, during the Filecoin testnet phase, Filecoin has already clearly stated that it supports 64GB sectors. Why don’t miners use 64GB sectors earlier? Because according to the official plan at the time, under the same hardware conditions, compared with 32GB sectors, using 64GB sectors reduced the gas by half, but the sealing efficiency was also reduced to 25%-40% of the original efficiency. Low sealing efficiency means wasting more hardware resources and reducing the computing power growth rate. Why does SpaceTime Cloud use 64GB sectors? In the eyes of many people, "using 64GB sectors to reduce gas fees and improve sealing efficiency" does not seem to be a win-win situation. There are even many voices in the market that if you want to use 64GB sectors to reduce gas fees, you have to accept longer packaging time, higher machine waste rate, and lower computing power growth rate. But, for the industry leader Spacetime Cloud, what is the truth? I wonder if you still remember that we shared an article before, "Distribution and clustering will eventually merge, a brief analysis of the optimization direction of Filecoin cluster architecture", which explains three clustering methods. The cluster of Spacetime Cloud can not only improve the subdivision and granularity of the cluster , but also reduce the coupling between systems , improve management efficiency and cluster effectiveness. This also means that SpaceTime Cloud can be more flexible when researching and adopting new solutions and adjusting components, thereby maximizing the reusability of mining machines and maintaining or even improving packaging efficiency. When everyone generally believed that the sealing speed of 64GB sectors was only 40% of that of 32GB, the Spacetime Cloud backend adopted the technical solution of P1, P2 and C1, C2 separation, which can maximize the use of hardware resources during the P1 and P2 stages. At the same time, we optimized the official algorithm at the bottom layer and further improved the concurrency. Therefore, with the new 64GB solution, our sealing speed has reached more than 70% of 32GB. Use technology to create strength and use results to prove ability When it comes to technological innovation, Spacetime Cloud is always at the forefront . Spacetime Cloud is not only the first miner in the industry to adopt 64GB sectors, but also the first to look at issues with a unique and developmental perspective in the early stages of the development of the Filecoin network . It is the first in the industry to use AMD processors, clarify GPU solutions, and use 32GB sectors in batches. Use technology to create strength, and use results to prove ability. Since the Filecoin code was officially open sourced and launched on the development test network, the outstanding achievements of Spacetime Cloud have been obvious to all.
