The Four Rivers Method of Viewing Face

The Four Rivers Method of Viewing Face

There is also a method in physiognomy that uses the four major rivers in China to represent the four parts of the face, which is called the Four Dus, which refer to the four parts of the human face, namely: the ears are the Jiang Du, the eyes are the He Du, the mouth is the Huai Du, and the nose is the Ji Du.

Ears are like rivers and dukes: the ears should have clear outlines, like a thick city or fortress; the ear holes should be wide and deep; ears that are higher than the eyebrows indicate intelligence and good fortune, and that the family business will not be ruined. If the outline is shallow, it means that one has little blessings.

Eyes are like rivers and canals: eyes should be long and slender, with clear black and white, and bright eyes indicate intelligence, and deep-looking eyes indicate longevity. If the eyes are shallow and short, it means a short life. If the eyes are cloudy and dull, it means there is no talent and the life span will not be long.

The mouth is like Huaidu: it means the lips should be square and wide, and the upper and lower lips should cover each other evenly. When the mouth is open to speak, it looks big, and when the mouth is closed, it looks small, which means that one has wealth and power. If the upper and lower lips are thin, it means a life of hard work; if one of the lips is more protruding or the other is thicker and larger, and the two are disproportionate, it means a lack of blessings in old age; if the corners of the lips droop and there are defects on the left and right, it means loneliness in old age.

The nose is Ji Du, which means the nose should be straight, plump, bright and round without any cracks, and the nostrils should not be exposed. This indicates the person is destined to be rich. If the nose is slanted, not high, or has a sharp hook like an eagle's beak, or the nostrils are exposed, it means that the person is not destined to be able to keep wealth.

Therefore, observing the ears, eyes, mouth and nose is called observing the four rivers, which is also a kind of physiognomy.
