What is the difference between a dimple and a vortex?

We have all heard of the term "dimpled smile". People with dimples are generally not bad looking, especially girls, who are particularly cute when they smile. So do you know what dimples are? What is the difference between a face and a dimple? Let’s take a look at this issue of the physiognomy column.

What are pear-dimples? Volume 12 of Helin Yulu by Luo Dajing of the Song Dynasty wrote: “Hu Dan’an was exiled overseas for ten years. On his day of returning north, he drank at Hu’s Garden in Xiangtan and wrote a poem: ‘You have granted me permission to return here, and after getting drunk, I have dimples on my cheeks. 'Refers to the courtesan Li Qian. "Then, "pear dimple" refers to wine dimples. It also refers to beautiful women. Men also have pear dimples, but they are more common in women. Pear dimples are also called imperfect beauty.
The pear dimple is located about 1 cm below and diagonally outside the corner of the mouth. It is smaller than the dimple and not as obvious as the dimple.

The difference between a dimple and a smile: When we smile, if the facial muscles (zygomatic major, zygomatic minor, zygomatic muscle) move against each other and form a depression, that is a dimple. But some people call it "laughing dimple", or because of its different position and size, it has another name "pear dimple". Not everyone has dimples, and those who have them may have different shapes, heights, and depths. To break it down, dimples are located within about 3 centimeters above and outside the corner of the mouth. There are two types: round and linear. The dimples are usually most visible when smiling.
The Origin of Pear-Dimple Hu Dan'an (1102-1180), whose name was Quan and whose courtesy name was Bangheng, was from Luling. A famous official of the Southern Song Dynasty. During the Shaoxing period, Qin Hui advocated peace, and the Jin envoys went south to deliver imperial edicts to the south of the Yangtze River. He submitted a memorial requesting that Qin Hui and his cronies Wang Lun and Sun Jin be beheaded and "hanged on the streets", and his reputation for loyalty and uprightness shocked the world. Qin Hui was furious because of this, and exiled Hu Quan to Lingnan for ten years on the charge of "arrogance, brutality, and inciting the masses to hijack."

It was not until Emperor Xiaozong ascended the throne that Hu Quan was reappointed. In Guangzhou, Hu Quan fell in love with a woman named Li Qian (some say Li Qian was a prostitute, here we follow Yuan Mei's statement). According to "Zhu Zi Daquan Zhayi" by Song Shiye of Korea, Li Qian was a married woman. Her husband discovered the affair between Hu Quan and Li Qian and forced Hu Quan to eat straw beans (horse feed mixed with straw and beans), "if not, he would be killed." Hu Quan had no choice but to endure the humiliation of eating straw beans. Afterwards, Hu Quan and Li Qian returned north from their place of exile. On the way, Hu Quan drank at the Hu Garden in Xiangtan. Slightly tipsy, he wrote a poem on the wall: "You have allowed me to return here for a drunken night, and there are dimples on my cheeks." The so-called "dimples on my cheeks" refers to Li Qian.
Therefore, "pear dimples" originally referred to the dimples of Li Qian, a prostitute in the Song Dynasty. Later it came to refer to the dimples on a woman's cheeks, a woman's smiling face, or a smile. Also known as "棃涡".
