A chain of coffee shops on the campus of the University of the Americas Puebla (UDLAP) in Mexico has started accepting Bitcoin payments. This will give the university's 8,000 students the opportunity to experience the emerging technology of Bitcoin firsthand. Previously, Simon Fraser University in Canada, Pompeu Fabra University in Spain and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States have also installed Bitcoin ATMs. The bitcoin payment processing service at the UCP cafe is provided by bitcoin exchange Bitso, which recently raised a seed round led by Digital Currency Group and has just launched a payment processing service, BitsoPagos. The cafe expressed confidence in Bitcoin payments and believed that this could expose more students to Bitcoin technology and could also encourage other local merchants to accept Bitcoin payments. Bitso Vice President Jose Rodriguez said in a statement:
Punta del Cielo Café was founded in 2004. As of 2012, it has more than 100 franchise stores in Mexico. It also has chain stores in Spain, the United States, and Hong Kong. |
