The U.S. Department of Justice holds a digital currency summit, calling for stronger communication between government and industry

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) held a conference on digital currency and blockchain technology in San Francisco today, the first time the DOJ has held a conference on the topic.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the goal of holding this meeting is to bring together private organizations such as businesses and public sectors such as government agencies to discuss how to prevent criminals from using digital currency technology to carry out cybercrime activities.

The conference was organized by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Digital Currency Task Force and held at the Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco. 175 business, legal and regulatory representatives participated in panel discussions to explore the theme of the conference from the perspectives of entrepreneurs, law enforcement officials and regulators.

Although the specific list of participants has not been announced, judging from the photos taken at the meeting, the speakers include XAPO CEO文斯•卡萨雷斯Casares, Coinbase founder弗雷德•艾尔萨姆, Ripple CEO Chris Larsen and others.

US Attorney布瑞恩•J•斯特雷奇said the meeting was intended to find common interests between the government and industry representatives in the field of distributed financial technology:

As emerging technologies such as digital currencies and blockchain begin to expand into new applications, it becomes increasingly critical for industry leaders and government agencies to strengthen communication and share insights in order to combat the criminal activity of these emerging technologies.

珍妮弗•沙思吉•喀弗里director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), echoed Stretch’s view that more dialogue is needed, saying that while her agency made early efforts to understand the industry, it was not enough because the evolving nature of the technology requires ongoing discussion.

“We open our minds to hearing what other issues there are to consider beyond just an anti-money laundering perspective. It’s important for government regulators, law enforcement agencies and digital currency technology industry leaders to communicate with each other to make sure we understand each other.”

Kathryn Haun, the DOJ’s digital currency crimes coordinator, told CoinDesk in September that the DOJ was planning to hold the meeting. In that interview, Haun detailed a number of missions and goals that her department would pursue.

At the time, Haun emphasized that the U.S. government was seeking broad participation from digital currency and blockchain industry leaders in order to clarify thinking and status on key issues.
