Europol, the European Union's top law enforcement agency, is seeking an intern who can track bitcoin transactions, according to a job posting published by the organization.

The successful candidate will join a project to support Europol's Cyber Intelligence Unit.

In addition to mastering English and being proficient in Office software, applicants also need to meet some special skill requirements:

  1. Have a basic understanding of tracking Bitcoin transactions and an interest in blockchain technology.

  2. Candidates also need to understand anonymity and encryption tools that are abused by criminals.

The successful candidate will be based at Europol's headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands, and will be responsible for quarterly reports on "new trends, threats and patterns" in cybercrime, with a particular focus on anonymity and encryption tools.

According to CoinDesk, when contacted, Europol said it could not comment on the situation at this time due to data protection rules.

Open source intelligence

The job advert reveals that Europol considers Bitcoin transactions to be a form of ‘open source’ intelligence, or OSINT for short. In fact, the successful applicant will also be supported by an OSINT expert from the Cyber Intelligence Team.

According to the FBI, open source intelligence is a type of intelligence gathering exercise that relies on the collection and analysis of a wide range of publicly available information.

The OSINT role is one of the six interns openly recruited by Europol, and the successful applicant will start the position in February next year.

Europol has analysed the potential for misuse of Bitcoin in the hands of criminals, and in September said Bitcoin accounts for up to 40% of online criminal-to-criminal payments, spurring the growth of an online ecosystem of 'criminal services'.
