Blockchain may enter college campus elections

Bitcoin House News November 26 CoinDesk reported that the West Virginia University (WVU) Student Government Association (SGA) is discussing whether to apply a blockchain-based voting platform to the upcoming election.

The initiative, led by West Virginia University students Ankur Kumar and Ricky Kirkendall , would allow students to use an iPad app instead of traditional voting machines to vote for student body president and vice president .

If the discussion is passed, the plan will save the Student Government Association $ 5,000-7,000 . There is no need to rent voting machines. Students only need to buy an iPad and run a voting app based on blockchain technology on it to complete the voting.

Emma Harrison, elected president of the Student Political Association , was optimistic about the plan but said the technology needed more extensive testing before it could be used.

However, not everyone at the academy is in favor of testing the technology.

In fact, this is a question raised by campus counselors Kumar and Kendall , who hope to solve it by creating an app called SureVoting .

"I like the idea, I like the premise, but I find it unethical that some unscrupulous people in the election would be responsible for coding the election results," said Daniel Brewster , adviser to the Student Political Association .

Additionally, Kumar plans to make it clear that the distributed records of blockchains are immutable. Kumar said:

" The votes we cast are recorded on the blockchain and can never be changed or deleted, no matter if he is a programmer, a college administrator, or a student. "
