Rejecting the offer to manage Barclays Investment Bank, the “Queen of Wall Street” chose to continue blockchain entrepreneurship

Blythe Masters has turned down an offer to run Barclays’ investment bank, opting instead to stay with her blockchain technology startup Digital Asset Holdings, according to Reuters.

The report, citing an anonymous source, said Barclays CEO Jes Staley is interested in asking Masters, his former colleague at JPMorgan, to lead Barclays' investment bank in the second half of next year.

Surprisingly, Masters declined the offer, saying she was “fully committed” to her startup, which plans to use blockchain technology to reduce settlement and clearing times for trades across various asset classes.

Masters told Reuters:

“I can’t think of anyone better than Jes Staley, or an institution more respectable than Barclays, but I’ve fought hard for digital assets and am totally committed to what we’re doing.”

Masters is one of the most powerful people in financial technology on Wall Street. She is the former global head of commodities at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and is widely recognized for inventing credit default swaps (CDS).

Edward Evans, editor-in-chief of Bloomberg Gadfly, commented that this could mark a turning point in finance. He said:

"For financiers, the allure of making a fortune in high-tech companies is now more attractive than running one of Europe's most prominent investment banks."

It is reported that Barclays Bank has recently been plagued by scandals and the British financial regulator has fined the bank 72 million pounds.

Staley had just taken over at Barclays two days earlier, having been fired by the board in July following a disagreement over cuts to its investment banking division.
