KnCMiner builds a new data center in the Arctic Circle

Swedish Bitcoin hardware manufacturer KnCMiner recently announced that its latest 20MW data center has been completed in the Swedish town of Boden. It took only four months from breaking ground to starting operations.

萨姆•科尔, the company's chief executive, said on Friday:

“The most time-consuming part of setting up a new data center is signing the agreement.”

The new data center was opened less than six months after KnCMiner's previous data center was built.

One of the reasons for such a fast speed is that there is no need to worry about heat dissipation. The data center is near the Arctic Circle, and cooling is very easy, such as opening the door. This place called "Node Pole" gathers data centers of more than a dozen companies. Luleå next to the town of Boden is the location of Facebook's data center. In addition, data centers of companies such as Hydro66 and Fortlax are gathered here. Because Node Pole provides companies with low-cost electricity resources, these data centers have become the most environmentally friendly data centers in the world. Node Pole includes the cities of Boden, Luleå, Piteå and Ælfsbyn. It is a non-profit organization that encourages companies to build data centers in this area.

The site has not been cleared yet, but Cole said everything will be ready in February or March next year, when the data center will use KnCMiner’s latest mining chips.

He said:

"In our 'game', timing is everything."

The "game" is bitcoin mining, which involves computing cryptographic hashes to continuously verify blocks of data on the blockchain, a distributed ledger used to record bitcoin transactions. For each successful bitcoin block verification, miners are rewarded with bitcoins.

As more and more people get involved in the mining "game", KnCMiner decided to develop customized mining chips to speed up hash calculations.
