Bitcoin startup Mega Upload founder faces extradition challenge

The latest news from New Zealand is that Bitcoin enthusiast and Mega Upload founder Kim Docomo may be extradited to the United States. US authorities have accused Docomo and three others of multiple crimes including money laundering and copyright infringement. The New Zealand resident has been playing games with the courts for a long time, so he is unlikely to create new projects in the short term.

A few months ago, Kim Dacon told the media via an Internet phone that he plans to create a new Mega company, Meganet. According to him, the service will work like a mesh type network for industry insiders, so it will be quite powerful. Dacon explained: " One day in the future, if you install the Meganet application on your smartphone, when you temporarily do not use your smartphone, you can still allow Meganet to use its processing power. If Meganet applications are installed on 100 million mobile phones, we will have more online storage capacity, bandwidth and computing power than the world's top ten websites combined. "

However, the Mega founder has been unable to delve into the project due to criminal charges and conspiracy issues he has faced in the past few months . An ardent Bitcoin supporter said a Chinese scammer, a Hollywood actor and the New Zealand government acquired his company without his consent.

Dakang said:

"His company was hostilely acquired by an investor wanted for fraud in China. He used a number of small businesses to accumulate more and more Mega shares. His shares were recently seized by the New Zealand government, which means the New Zealand government actually controls Mega."

At the time, Bitcoinist reached out to Dacon for an interview in early October last year. “I got in touch with the Mega founder, but lost touch immediately, he seemed to be tied up in the trial,” the reporter said. Auckland Court has ruled that all four men meet the conditions for extradition, and Dacon’s life is likely to get even busier. If the New Zealand resident’s allegations are proven, he faces 20 years in prison. Dacon is also facing criminal charges for copyright infringement and making a profit of $175 million. But the Mega founder denies the music and film industry’s assertion of up to $500 million in profits.

In 2012, New Zealand authorities ordered Mega to cease its online operations, and police raided Dacom's home to search for more evidence. The extradition hearing was held in 2015, and as time passed, the matter was affecting his future. After the trial in Auckland court, Dacom told the media that he was disappointed with the result. Later, his legal team Rosken issued a statement on Twitter: "The Kim Dacom team looks forward to the US Supreme Court's review of its client's extradition."

After the trial process was temporarily over, Dacom also issued a statement on Twitter:

"My team and I have carefully read today's court ruling. I have to say it is very unconvincing and a Christmas present in disguise!

Thank you for your support. The fight continues. Enjoy your vacation. I am glad to be with my kids. There are more important things in this world than copyright :-)”

Despite the impact of the lawsuit, Dacon still seems to be quite optimistic in his social media appearances. His Meganet project is powered by Bitcoin and will resist censorship for the masses. He explained: "Don't you wish there was a new network that cannot be controlled, censored or destroyed by governments and companies? I am working hard to develop such a network - Maganet. " However, Dacon's plans to design a new Mega platform may have to wait, as he will soon face legal proceedings in the United States.

The Auckland judge presiding over Dacon's case said they had a lot of evidence against the New Zealand defendant. Dacon's American lawyer told the radio station that his client's extradition case is likely to be taken over by the Supreme Court and could last up to four years. Is it possible for him to complete the Meganet project during this time?
