Segregated verification code will be written into Bitcoin Core 0.13, activation time to be determined

The Bitcoin Core development conference announced that the code for Segregated Witness (SegWit) has been written. Bitcoin Core developer Eric Lombrozo said that the code will be written into Bitcoin Core in the near future.

The Importance of Segregated Witness

Segregated verification can improve the Bitcoin protocol and bring a lot of new features to the entire network. The Bitcoin community has been discussing segregated verification for a long time, because segregated verification can increase the Bitcoin block capacity by about 1.7 megabytes.

In addition to this advantage, Segregated Verification can also solve the problem of transaction malleability. This security vulnerability was exposed in the Mt. Gox incident. The Lightning Network is also committed to solving this historical legacy of the Bitcoin protocol.

Recently, Bitcoin Core developer Johnson Lau talked about how Segregated Witness can help Bitcoin opcodes (opcodes) be enabled more easily and quickly. These newly enabled opcodes can make the Bitcoin network's financial transactions more flexible.

When asked about the importance of SegWit, he said:

Segregated verification is the most important update to the Bitcoin protocol to date. It can combine the original design of the Bitcoin protocol to solve some specific problems, such as increasing block capacity and solving more complex smart contract application problems.

Bitcoin Core 0.13 will not activate Segwit code

Although the Segwit code will be written into Bitcoin Core soon, it will take some time for it to be activated on the entire network. The Segwit code will be written into Bitcoin Core 0.13, and it may not be until Bitcoin Core 0.13.1 is released that miners will be able to vote for Segwit (it can only be activated if more than 95% of miners are online).

Although the SegWit code has been tested, Lombrozo said it has chosen not to activate it for now because the development team needs to conduct more in-depth testing to ensure it can be fully integrated into the bitcoin protocol.

Whether to activate, the future is unknown

Bitmain CEO Jihan Wu said that if the new version of Bitcoin Core does not release the hard fork code, Antpool will not run its segregated verification code. As of press time, Antpool represents 18% of the network's computing power.

Segregated verification is a soft fork that can only be activated after more than 95% of miners in the entire network agree. The code for segregated verification is almost complete, but it will take some time for activation.
