Megaupload storage service plans to revive next year, this time it has something to do with Bitcoin

The controversial Megaupload service is about to resurface, and this time, it will involve Bitcoin.

According to the BBC, Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom plans to restart the network storage system in January 2017.

Megaupload was once the 13th most visited website on the Internet, and at its peak, it had 50 million daily users.

However, in 2012, the US government shut down Megaupload on the grounds that a large number of pirates were using its services.

In the following years, Kim Dotcom also tried to restart Megaupload, but was unsuccessful.

On July 10, Kim Dotcom announced the resurrection plan with a playful metaphor on Twitter:

“I can tell you that Megaupload had sex with Bitcoin and got pregnant, and I have a feeling the baby is going to be a happy one.”

It is reported that Megaupload 2.0, which was restarted in 2017, will provide each user with 100 GB of free storage, unlimited data transfer, and use real-time encryption technology. In addition, Jin Dakang also plans to deploy the original Megaupload user database and invite the original 100 million users to participate in this new website.

Will become part of the decentralized Internet project MegaNet

However, Kim Dotcom's ambitions go far beyond this. He plans to make Megaupload 2.0 a component of MegaNet, an upcoming project that wants to achieve a decentralized Internet through blockchain technology and smartphones. The plan requires millions of smartphones around the world to use MegaNet applications, together providing enough bandwidth, computing power and storage to realize a decentralized, censorship-resistant version of the Internet through these devices.

It is reported that the earliest release time of MegaNet will be sometime in 2018.
